Congratulations to the Jeep team for crossing into 10,000 bookings. This has made it an exciting start for the company. There has been a lot of talking about the brand and this time around they have sold a good amount of inventory to give the team a boost and an increase in the moral. We hope to see the Jeep Compass petrol and the diesel automatic sometime soon. This will turn around the game for the brand.

Jeep Compass is launched for ₹17.55 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai) . This is an all new SUV from the American automaker. Jeep had launched its brand a while ago with two new SUVs that were rather expensive. The Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee to begin with. These are imported and hence have seen an increase in its pricing. On the other hand, the Compass shall be locally manufactured and even exported to other car markets. Jeep already has received about 4,000 bookings for this new SUV. It does seem to be a great start for an all new brand in India.

This is based on a platform that is highly localised, which has helped to reduce its pricing. In size, the Jeep Compass is bigger than the Hyundai Creta but smaller than the Tucson. There is a lot of work that has happened on this new SUV and Jeep will be not just selling it in India but even exporting to other right hand drive markets as well. This will help to increase its production and reduce the costing.

There are two engine options available. One is a 1.4-litre petrol and the second 2.0-litre diesel. Both will have six-speed manual transmission. Petrol will have a seven-speed automatic but the diesel will have 9-speed automatic (which will be launched next year). So, what does the SUV have on offer? Is it worth considering? Jeep Compass India Design

In terms of design, the Jeep Compass has most of the elements one is looking for. The design has a good road presence, there is more than enough similarity to the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Compass gets the seven slat front grille and somewhat hawk-eye line design. The higher spec model gets projector headlamps and daytime running LEDs. The bumper too is wide and its lower end is black matte to avoid any scratches on the paint if and when off roading.

Jeep Compass Side

The side profile does have the SUV like boxy styling, but the low stance makes it seem more like a crossover. The wheel arches are muscular and squarish. The door pillars are blacked out and there are roof rails too. The alloy wheels fill the arches well and they do not appear to be empty at any point. There are clean lines that run across the SUV. The rear styling of this new SUV also melds well with its overall design. The tail lamps are neatly integrated and they do look stylish. There is an integrated rear spoiler and reflectors in the bumper. The overall styling is just impressive and even the paint quality makes it feel premium.

The Compass doesn’t seem to look very tall and its design will somewhat appear like a crossover. So, we aren’t certain on what will a buyer’s reaction to this design. The Jeep Compass India production will actually make it easier for the company to enhance their sales numbers as the pricing should be highly competitive.

Jeep Compass India Colours

The Jeep Compass will made available in a mix of trendy and subtle colour options. The Red and the blue look stylish and appealing. But there are many who prefer simpler colours and for them the basics are there. The Jeep Compass doesn’t just have good number of colours but even a variety to pick from. Our pick is the red as it does stand out in the crowd.

  • Exotic Red
  • Vocal White
  • Minimal Grey
  • Brilliant Black
  • Hydro Blue

Jeep Compass India Interiors

Jeep Compass Interior

The Jeep Compass India gets dual tone interiors with black and sky grey colours. The instrument panel design is neat and it does stand out. There is a three-spoke steering wheel with controls, a twin dial instrument cluster with driver information system. Fiat was the first brand in its segment to offer driver information system in the Linea and even the Punto. Jeep is also setting new standards.

Jeep Compass - Rear Seats (2)The centre console has a 7-inch touchscreen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Then there is the climate control followed by the off-road hardware. Controls to move into different modes. Then there is the electronic parking brake, which can be seen on all the models. The space on offer is good enough. The front seats offer very good bolstering and are comfortable. There is more than sufficient head room and knee room for tall persons too.

Jeep Compass Rear MotionSlide into the rear seats and you won’t be disappointed either. There is more than sufficient space for tall occupants even at the rear. The boot size is also large enough making it more than sufficient in size to carry luggage for an entire weekend. Whats more the seats fold 60:40 making it a lot more flexible too. In terms of safety, two airbags and ABS will be offered as a standard feature.

Jeep Compass India Specifications

Engine 1.4-litre petrol 2.0-litre diesel
Power 138bhp 170bhp
Torque 260Nm 350Nm
Transmission 6-speed manual / 7-speed DDC (automatic) 6-speed manual

A 2.0-litre multijet engine will be powering the Jeep Compass India . This will be offered with a six-speed manual . This engine will churn about 170bhp of power and 358Nm of maximum torque. The Jeep Compass India will be coming with AWD versions. This engine is likely to be shared with Tata Motors, upcoming new Harrier platform SUVs. Both the companies have a JV in Ranjangaon. The company’s plant is undergoing expansion at the moment. The diesel engine will be shared with the Tata Q501. This is also likely to be made in the same Ranjangaon plant. An automatic will be offered on the Compass diesel, but that shall be some time in 2018.

Jeep Compass - Gear KnobThe petrol engine will be the 1.4-litre, which will come in MultiAir avatar. This will churn about 160bhp of power and 250Nm of peak torque. This will get a six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic (dual-clutch) transmission. Both these engines will be manufactured in India as well. This is the same engine that is offered on the Abarth family but it has seen a jump in its power and even torque. This will improve its performance and even the six-speed/seven-speed transmission will improve its bandwidth.

Whats more, both the companies are looking at exporting their cars from India. Jeep has just announced that there will be two gearboxes, manual and automatic (dual-clutch), we reckon the diesel should get the automatic if not the petrol. The 2017 Jeep Compass even gets Select Terrain Management System, which helps to enhance the driving experience, especially when driving on different terrain conditions. This is useful when driving off the road, on slush or sand or snowy conditions.

Jeep Compass India Mileage

Engine City Highway
Petrol Manual 9km/l 13km/l
Petrol Automatic 9km/l 13km/l
Diesel 4×2 13.5km/l 17km/l
Diesel 4×4 12.7km/l 16km/l

The new Jeep Compass will return about 13km/l in the city for the diesel and close to 17km/l on the highway. The petrol will have a mileage of 9km/l for the manual and automatic in city and close to 13km/l on the highway for both. There shall not be a major difference in the mileage for both the transmissions on petrol. Now going by the ARAI figures, the 2.0-litre 4×2 will return about 17.1km/l and 4×4 has 16.3km/l. No numbers have been released for the petrol engine.

Jeep Compass BootJeep Compass India Dimensions

Length 4,398 mm
Width 1,814 mm
Height 1,667 mm
Wheelbase 2,600 mm
Ground Clearance 178mm

In terms of dimensions, the Jeep Compass doesn’t seem to be huge. But when you do the measures it does appear to be bigger. This is because of its lower height and good width. The Jeep Compass has more than sufficient space on the inside. The dimensions make it look compact. The wheelbase is decent but the ground clearance is more than sufficient on the Compass. The other important aspect of the Compass is the styling. There is a lot of resemblance to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Jeep Compass India Warranty and Service

The warranty on offer on the Jeep Compass is of 3 years and 100,000kms (1 lakh kms). There is also 3 years road side assistance, which is available as complimentary service (no extra charges at all). The service interval is 15,000kms or 1 year, whichever is earlier.
