New Hyundai Tucson 2016 Exterior

Hyundai tucson front

Based on the new Fluidic design, the new Tucson has a lot of design cues from the Santa Fe. Hyundai is flowing a family design look for all the SUVs and the Tucson gets it too. The new Tucson’s front grille has a lot of chrome on it. The headlamps are sleek and pulled back. The fascia has good presence. The side profile is very much like a crossover, and it doesn’t boxy styling. The lines flow smoothly. The rear is similar to the Santa Fe and the Creta.

The side profile looks taller because of the shallow glass area. There is a thick crease line that rises slowly as we move to the rear. The tyre size seems to fill the wheel well completely. The rear too is based on the Creta’s design. Sleek tail lamps dominate the styling with the number plate underneath. This is what makes the Tucson look stylish and appealing.

The other aspect of the Tucson is its comfort. This five-seater SUV has good space in both the rows. There is a large size boot too which has a capacity of 513 litres. What makes it appealing is the fact that it has comfortable seats and rear AC vents too. This SUV comes loaded with a chunk of features that makes it a good value for money proposition. Dual zone AC, eight-inch HD touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Car Play, ten way electric seat adjustment, automatic tailgate opening are some of the high end features on this SUV.

New Hyundai Tucson 2016 Engine

For the Indian market, the Tucson will get a 2.o-litre VTVT petrol engine which delivers 153bhp of power and 192Nm of torque. There is also a 2.0-litre CRDi diesel engine that delivers a maximum power output of 183bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. It can achieve a top speed of 201 km/h. Bothe these engines are mated to a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. There is no 4WD option available.

The pick of the lot is the 2.0 diesel engine. It has a phenomenal punch and is thrilling to drive. There’s hardly any lag and it pulls away cleanly. The gearbox also responds well. The petrol in comparison is more relaxed. It is is more suited for city driving, whereas the diesel is great on the highways too. Overtaking is a breeze. On the transmission, needless to say that the automatic adds to the comfort factor so it is the one to consider. But if you are a petrolhead who loves manuals, then it is a different matter. Of course it will cost less too.

New Hyundai Tucson 2016 Ride and Handling

The Tucson has a pliant ride overall, however there is some scope of improvement. It handles well with minimum body roll. the Tucson suspension has rebound dampers which hep controlling body roll. However, the low speed ride gets harsh. What we like is that the steering is weighted and it not very light as in some other Hyundais. However, there is still some kind of disconnect and it doesn’t feel as confidence inspiring as some of the competition.

The Tucson may not entice the enthusiastic driver but it is still good for normal driving and manages well even at high speeds. The brakes are good but they do tend to bite suddenly, something which we had also experienced in the Creta.

New Hyundai Tucson 2016 Mileage

The Tucson is expected to return 8-9 km/l for the automatic petrol and 12-14 km/l for the manual version. The diesel manual will return around 12km/l and automatic around 10 km/l. Hyundai may also consider getting a hybrid version later sometime. At the moment, there is no clarity on the hybrid version as the company wants to measure the success it will achieve with this new SUV. This segment has been dormant and Hyundai has opened it up with the Tucson.

The Tucson’s pricing will start from the point where the Creta ends. The Tucson is priced between INR 20.9 lakhs to INR 27 lakhs (on-road). With this the Tucson will be a good option for those who are looking for a premium SUV in this price range. It will somewhat overlap with the Hyundai Elantra also, but then this will be a different segment altogether.

Verdict

So why should you buy the Tucson? Well, if you are looking to upgrade from a Creta or a Duster, but do not want to buy a full size seven seater SUV like the Fortuner or Endeavour, then the Tucson fits the bill perfectly. It is not too big but has most of the features found in SUVs from higher segments. We like the Tucson for its styling, features, space and the punchy diesel engine.
