The new-generation premium Fiat hatchback has been in the spyshots for a long time. We Fiat fans have been waiting to have a glance at this new car. Christened as the Fiat Argo, the company has recently revealed the images of this sleek and modern car.  The name “Argo” indicates to Jason and the Argonauts from Greek mythology. This is made on a new platform, which is agile and even modular. Brazil is the first country where it has been launched and this will be unveiled in other markets very soon.

In terms of design, the Italian flair can be seen in its design. There is a honeycomb grille, which is a typical of the new-gen Fiat cars. The headlamps are sleek and pulled back. The front bumper even has a meshed grille for air passage. The crowned hood has crisp strakes.

The side profile makes the Argo look long. The tail lamps looks like a continuation of the front. The design is intriguing. The features list on offer is good enough as it gets all the basic features one looks out for, in today’s date.

Fiat has unveiled this car with three trim levels – Drive, Precision and HGT. The engine options on offer are three of them, which include 1.0 Firefly, 1.3-litre Firefly and a 1.8-litre E-Torq Evo. These engines come with options of five-speed and six-speed manual and AMTs. Formerly known as the X6H, this is built on the X6 platform. The new sedan on this platform X6S, will replace the Linea and Siena in most of the car markets.

Fiat hasn’t made any official announcement on the Argo for India. We aren’t certain if it will be coming anytime soon, as the company is at the moment focusing on the Jeep Compass and then the Renegade. What is more? Fiat will be continuing on the same SCA platform and if the new-gen hatchback and sedan come to India, they shall be based on the same platform. This will mean that most of the other bits like engines and suspension should be similar on the newer cars. Even if Fiat gets the new cars, it will be sometime in late 2018 at least.

Fiat Argo Launch Date

To be honest, we cannot say when could this hatchback make it in India. And more importantly, if it will be come? We could see it at the 2018 Auto Expo, but we cannot be certain about it. But if Fiat needs to continue in India, which it will we should expect this new hatchback to make it into production at Ranjangaon.

Fiat Argo Design

Argo has been built on an a new platform, which is called as the small wide platform. This one shares its underpinnings with the Tipo and the Mobi. All these three hatchbacks follow a similar design pattern called as “wraparound design philosophy.” The styling looks aggressive with a stylish front grille and pulled back sleek headlamps. These have projector lights and even daytime running LEDs as well.

The top-of-the-line variant even gets Abarth-like red contrast outline on the front bumper. There is a thin plastic cladding on the wheel arches, side skirts and the bumpers.

Fiat Argo rear

A dual tone colour scheme is offered, and this gets a contrast roof colour. The matte black cladding is there on base and mid-level variants. There is a crisp swage line that runs across the car. At the same time, the tail lamps look appealing too. The B-pillar has a matte black colour on it. The rear might look plain Jane, but it has its own charm. Simplicity with funky looks, this is how one can describe the rear. It has a hint of sportiness and class. The new Fiat logo for the rear is just so WOW! This has similarity to the Tipo as well. This design just looks so classy.

Fiat Argo Interiors

The all-black interiors look sporty. The design appears to be simple and easy to use. There is an all new three spoke steering wheel that looks chunky to hold. There is a large 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is the UConnect. This gets bluetooth connectivity, USB and aux-input and reverse camera. There is even an automatic climate control and a 3.5-inch driver information system as well. It even gets Electric mirrors and puddle lamps also. Follow-me home is a part of the family even today.

In terms of safety, the Argo gets front and side airbags, ISOFIX, parking sensors, ESP, traction control and hill hold function. These are for the Brazilian market. India should get all except side airbags.

Fiat Argo Engine and Transmission

Aspects Petrol Diesel
Engines 1.4-litre 1.3-litre
Power 90bhp 75bhp
Torque 115Nm 190Nm
Transmission 5-speed manual

An array of new engines are being offered in Brazil. There are three engines on offer and these are from a basic 1.0-litre to a 1.8-litre. So a buyer will get to choose from an entire family range. This will help them to add more numbers and attract different kinds of buyers. Fiat Argo will be offered in India and there won’t be too many options like the Brazilian market. We reckon for India, the Fiat Argo should come with a 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engine. These will be the same like the one on the Punto. Apart from this, the 1.2-litre petrol might either get an upgrade or shall be discontinued. For India, these will be the new engines mostly if they come into our market.

The 1.4-litre petrol churns about 90bhp of power and 115Nm of maximum torque. The diesel engine is a 1.3-litre one that produces about 75bhp and will come with 190Nm of maximum torque.

Both these engines will be offering a five-speed manual transmission. There is AMT on offer in other markets like Brazil, we aren’t certain if Fiat will get it to India.

Fiat Argo Release Date

Brazil is one of the biggest markets for Fiat and the company will be unveiling the car there first. The Fiat Argo will first be launched in Brazil and then it shall make an appearance in other markets as well.

Fiat Argo Mileage

Engine Estimated Mileage
1.4-litre petrol 17 km/l
1.3-litre diesel 21 km/l

It bit be a bit early to state this, but with the same platform and similar set of engines, there shouldn’t be a major change in the engine’s mileage either. We reckon that the new Argo should have similar estimated fuel efficiency.

Fiat Argo Price In India

Engine Variant Expected Price
1.4-litre petrol Base INR 6 lakhs
Top INR 7.5 lakhs
1.3-litre diesel Base INR 7.2 lakhs
Top INR 8.5 lakhs

The new Argo looks stylish and will replace the Punto if it comes to India. The pricing will be similar to the Punto, which is one of the best looking hatchbacks even today. As the 1.2-litre petrol might not be offered, the pricing will be a tad higher than the current base models. Fiat will be looking at pricing it aggressively.

Fiat Argo Competition

This new hatchback will go up against the Maruti Swift, Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Grand i10, Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz and the Hyundai Elite i20. Tata is also looking at getting into this segment with its premium hatchback X451, this might have some similarity or engine sharing mostly.

Fiat Argo Coming to India?

We doubt it. There are multiple reasons for it:

  1. It is based on a new platform, which isn’t being considered for India as Fiat will stick on the SCA (small car architecture) platform for manufacturing all the new Fiats and Jeep models.
  2. The current focus is more on Jeeps, at least for the next two years. This means even if it comes, there is still some good time.
  3. If it comes, it will be engineered to be made on the SCA platform itself to reduce the cost. This is the only way, it could make it to India.
