As India has become an SUV-loving country, maintaining a potent car has become a necessity for every manufacturer. Currently, the segment is undergoing a lot of layering due to the various categorizations, depending on the size & dimensions. Manufacturers are putting in a lot of effort to bring SUVs to position in different layers. Of late, Tata has been giving special attention to its SUVs and has some more special plans in the making. Tata is working on a new C-segment SUV that could be a tough rival for the Hyundai Creta. The Blackbird moniker has long been echoing in the market. So, what could the Tata Blackbird actually be? What could it look like? That is what we discuss in this article.

Tata Blackbird

Tata has SUVs in some really lucrative segments, however, it misses out on one important space; the C-SUV segment. However, to tackle the likes of Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, Tata is already working on a product, the concept for which was already showcased. We are talking about the Curvv concept. However, if you think about it, not everyone would want a coupe SUV, even if they appreciate its design, given the fact that coupe-styled SUVs compromise with headroom. For that, Tata could bring two C-segment SUVs. One with a sloping coupe-like roofline for all the enthusiast buyers who love the sporty looks and another car with a conventional SUV look. This could give more options to the buyers choosing between two body styles and will also fill the void that a coupe SUV might leave in this lucrative space.

Now, could the Curvv and Blackbird be related? Like most other brands, Tata might change the name of the Creta rival when it officially launches in the market. As mentioned above, the Blackbird name has long been echoing in the market. Tata could use this very popular name for its Creta rival as people are already familiar with it. We thus expect one of the Creta rivals to carry this name.

Tata Blackbird – Design

The design could take inspiration from the Curvv concept procuring the rugged skid plates, tall stance and smartly designed lights. It is certain that the Blackbird could gravitate towards the bold and striking appearance of other Tata SUVs. To be based on a modified version of the X1 platform, this new C-segment SUV would share its underpinnings with the Nexon and will come with a longer wheelbase. Now, will it get a sloping roof or will it get a conventional SUV design is something that cannot be confirmed as of now.

According to our internal sources, Tata has already started testing two petrol engines for the Curvv. The first engine will be the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit that it uses on cars like the Nexon and the Altroz but is expected to undergo some sort of re-tuning to produce more power. The next engine option could be a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit that the brand is already developing. This engine could produce around 150bhp & is expected to come mated to a manual and DCA gearbox. Talking about the diesel option, the 1.5-litre diesel unit could make its way to this SUV.

Apart from this, Tata has already confirmed that a Curvv-based EV will make its way to the market first, which will then be followed by the above-mentioned ICE cars.

Launch details

Tata has confirmed that Curvv will make its entry in the market sometime in 2024. However, what name do you think would suit this SUV? Let us know in the comments.
