Tata Harrier has been India’s one of the favourite SUVs. It comes loaded with modern features and technology and offers excellent ride quality. Although being an SUV, the SUV fans were kind of disappointed with the Harrier as it misses out on an important SUV trait. However, Tata Motors has listened to the customers and they will bring that missing factor with their upcoming Tata Harrier EV. What’s that? We will be telling you in today’s article.

What’s that missing factor?

It is the All Wheel Drive (AWD) system! Tata Harrier itself is an outstanding product but although being an SUV, the Harrier is a front wheel driven car. Also, Tata Motors is known to provide 4WD or AWD systems in their SUVs like seen in past on Sierra, old Safari, or even on MPV like the Hexa. But a Tata SUV without an AWD disappointed many. Also it’s not that Tata Harrier isn’t capable of AWD hardware. It is based on the Land Rover’s platform which is highly capable to equip the AWD hardware.

However, Tata Motors have decided to bring an AWD system with the upcoming Harrier EV. In a recent interview with the MD of Tata Motors Mr. Shailesh Chandra, confirmed that the Harrier EV will be equipped with AWD. This would be made possible as the Harrier EV will be powered with two motors; one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle. These motors would channel power to both the axles individually, just like any AWD hardware works.

What could have been interesting is Tata Motors equipping the ICE Harrier with AWD or 4WD. But unfortunately that’s not going to happen. So to buy a Harrier AWD, you will have to buy the EV version of the Harrier.

Tata Harrier EV coming soon!

Tata Harrier EV could possibly be the first Tata EV to be based on Tata’s Gen-2 platform. In the Gen-1 platform based cars, they swapped the batteries and motors with the engine and mechanicals. Whereas in the Gen-2 based cars, they will use the architecture of the ICE version and modify them extensively to fit a bigger battery pack. Also, this could even help them to give a flatter floor. But what will it look like?

So showcased in Auto Expo 2023, we got a hint of how the Harrier EV would actually look like. The design elements are completely changed and will come loaded with features. In fact the upcoming Harrier facelift will also have the same design cues of that of the Harrier EV. Design wise, the Harrier EV will get redesigned bumpers and redesigned headlamps which will be all LED. Also, as seen on the Nexon.ev facelift, the Harrier EV will also get connected DRLs and connected LED tail lamps. The interiors would be very similar to the upcoming Harrier facelift with a similar list of features.

Features like a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, rotary styled drive mode selector, 360-degree camera, voice assisted sunroof, ventilated seats, ADAS, and many more. Also it could possibly share features like Vehicle to Vehicle charging and Vehicle to Load which was recently introduced on the Nexon EV facelift.

Specifications

Regarding the battery pack we do not have an exact number for now. However we can expect that the Harrier EV would be powered by a 60 to 70kWh battery pack. Also, as mentioned before, the SUV will be equipped with dual motors, making it a capable AWD off roader. The Harrier EV is expected to have a claimed range of around 550km with a real life range of 400km.

Tata Harrier EV – Launch and Price

In the same interview, Mr. Shailesh Chandra confirmed that the Harrier EV would be launched next year in 2024. It will be slotted above the ICE Harrier and is expected to be priced around Rs 27 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) with the top model going up to Rs 35 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
