Maruti Jimny Electric is it happening?

The EV scene is growing in the country and it is also spilling into the lifestyle SUV segment. Mahindra is going to reveal the Thar EV concept on the 15th of August. Likewise, Maruti Suzuki also has plans to bring the Jimny Electric. The brand is keen to build on the image of Jimny. So how real is the possibility of the Jimny electric happening? In today’s article, let’s talk about Maruti Jimny Electric. 

Is it possible?

At the launch of the Invicto, Maruti showcased silhouettes of its upcoming EVs. One of them had a strong resemblance to Jimny. Suzuki has already confirmed that it plans to launch the Jimny EV in Europe. Currently, Suzuki sells the 3-door Jimny as a commercial vehicle in Europe due to the stringent emission norms. This is why Suzuki is working on the Jimny EV. In Europe, we will see the EV version of the 3-door version. Reports state that this 3-door could be launched by 2026. After that, we could see the EV version of the 5-door version sold in India. 

Challenges

Converting a body-on-frame SUV into an electric is not an easy task. The body-on-frame chassis takes up a lot of space that can be used to fit the battery pack. Add to that the compact dimensions of Jimny, & Suzuki has a major problem on its hands. Still, it is not unheard of in the industry, with the most prominent example being the Ford F-150 lighting. So Suzuki can surely employ a similar strategy on the Jimny Electric. 

Maruti Jimny Electric – More details

Suzuki will have to also find a way to secure the battery properly. It can either be installed in the frame leading to a more secure position. According to reports, we could see a 60kWh battery pack on the Jimny Electric. Also, Suzuki will need to employ dual motors if it wants to retain the off-road capabilities of Jimny on its EV version. This all will make the Jimny Electric heavy, so Maruti will need powerful motors to power it efficiently.
