The Maruti Swift is one of the best-selling hatchbacks in our country. What makes Swift so popular? It has to be its sporty looks and peppy performance. The Swift was the second best-selling car in June, with 16,213 units sold. So what’s next for Swift? A new generation? The new generation is on the cards, but not so soon. Instead, Maruti Suzuki could bring the performance-oriented Swift Sport to India in the coming time. The market for such a hot hatch is almost non-existent in India & Maruti can benefit from that and rake in good sales. In today’s article, we will talk about this Rs 12 lakh Maruti car to create a new segment.
Maruti Swift Sport India – Design
The normal Swift is already a sporty car, and the Swift Sport takes it a step further. It gets a honeycomb grille with a unique staggered design. The rest of the front remains more or less identical to the normal Swift. The side profile is also similar, barring the different alloy wheel designs. What about the rear? The rear gets that sporty treatment with dual exhaust on the bumper. Inside the Swift Sport, we have red touch on the seats and dashboard. Suzuki also gives it sporty alloy pedals.
Specifications
Dimension-wise, the Swift Sport is more buffed up than the normal Swift. It is 50mm longer and 40mm wider than the normal Swift. What about the engine options? Globally the Swift Sport comes with a K14C 1.4-litre Booster Jet turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 138bhp & 230Nm of torque which are quite some numbers for a hatchback. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Maruti Swift Sport India – Features
Features have become an important selling point even in enthusiast-oriented cars. The Swift Sport sold globally comes with a decent amount of features. What extra does it get over the normal Swift? It gets 6-airbags, adaptive cruise control and a Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).
Will it come to India?
Maruti Suzuki is yet to confirm anything regarding Swift Sport’s entry in India. Then why are we expecting so much? Earlier this year, the Swift Sport was spotted testing on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway not on one but quite a few occasions. All these details hint that Maruti could launch the Swift Sport in India, but another possibility is that Maruti is using the car just for component testing. We think Maruti could be testing that 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine for the much-awaited 5-door Jimny. Nevertheless, if Maruti does decide to launch Swift Sport in India, the ideal pricing for it should be somewhere between Rs 12 lakh to Rs 13 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It will rival the Hyundai i20N Line in this price range.
