The Maruti Alto is a car that everyone is familiar in India. It has been the choice for many first-time buyers thanks to its reliability and ease of ownership. The Alto in a way has done very well in carrying forward the legacy of the iconic 800. This hatchback has been the almost the same for quite many years now but Maruti is set to change this. The Alto is soon set to get a generational update in the near future. The next-generation car has already been spotted testing on multiple occasions and we have already been writing a lot about it. Maruti Alto to get a new engine?
The Maruti Alto currently comes with a 796cc engine. This engine is capable of producing 47bhp & 69Nm of torque and this engine has been the sole unit powering this car since the post-BS6 era. To those unfamiliar, pre-BS6, Maruti offered a 1.0-litre engine on this car and sold it as Alto K10. But the strict BS6 emission norms forced Maruti to discontinue this car. However that was apparently not the end. According to new development, Maruti is looking to re-introduce the 1.0-litre engine. This could be the same engine that Maruti uses on the S-Presso. This engine makes 67bhp & 90Nm of torque. Maruti could even go one step further and also introduce an AMT gearbox on this engine. If the AMT plan goes ahead, it could become the cheapest automatic car in the country. The 1.0-litre unit made the Alto a very fun-to-drive machine and same is expected to happen with this update. However, this time around, Maruti might offer even better fuel-efficiency with the car.
What else do we know?
The new Maruti Alto will mostly come based on the HEARTECT platform. With this new platform, Maruti is looking to make it bigger than the current model. The spy shots have already revealed that the new one will be taller. What other changes can we expect? Regular changes like new headlamps, new grille and taillamps are expected.
Launch timeline
According to the latest reports, trial production for the new Alto is expected to start this month. So why is this important? This will mean the launch could happen in the upcoming months, somewhere before the festive seasons. Considering the popularity of Alto, Maruti would be looking to target the festive season to maximise its sales.
However, with all of this being said, there is still a question whether Maruti would continue making these small hatchbacks. The recent push towards safety from the government is bound to make these affordable budget cars costlier and reduce the profit margin for manufacturers, especially Maruti Suzuki, since their maximum sales are brought in by such budget hatchbacks.
