Mahindra Funster was a concept car shown at the Auto Expo 2020. It was a convertible SUV which could be the design inspiration for future Mahindra SUVs. Till now we have not seen any new cars based on this concept. So what is this concept? Which cars will be taking that design and how will Mahindra incorporate this Mahindra Funster. This is exactly what we will discuss in today’s article.

2021 Mahindra Thar updates – What is expected?

Two Unknown Cars

Mahindra has plans for two SUVs which will be based on the monocoque platform. One of them is going to be the XUV900 and the other one would be the updated new-generation Mahindra XUV500. Both these cars would be made with electric powertrains. Now, the Funster could be the design basis for both these cars, however, there is more to it. The XUV900 has more space to play around with as it is a completely new product. It is expected to be a SUV based coupe and will could be accompanied with the convertible SUV design of the Mahindra Funster. Will Mahindra get a convertible SUV based on a monocoque  platform? We will have to wait and see.

We will also have to see what direction Mahindra will head in terms of design in the future with Pratap Bose at the helm.

Could Funster be a pure electric car?

There are two pure EVs included in Mahindra’s future plans. There is no confirmation on what kind of cars those would be. If one of them turns out to be an SUV based on the Funster Concept, it would be a really interesting project to look at. The Mahindra Funster claimed to have an output of 230 kW and a top speed of 200 km/h. It was also supposed to do 0-100km/h in 5 secs. The Funster was equipped with a 59.1 kW battery pack which would give it a range of 520 km on a single charge.

All this information about the Funster is not for the production car. These numbers are difficult to achieve in a production car as of now. They have the barrier of cost which makes it a big problem for the manufacturer to offer high-performance electric powertrains which can also have a decent range. Mahindra has some amount of experience when it comes to electric powertrains as they had cars like the eVerito and the E2O. The eXUV300 was expected, however, now that the timeline has been revealed, there don’t seem any chances of it appearing soon due to the on-going pandemic and micro-chip shortage.
