The recently introduced Bharath NCAP has successfully crash-tested the Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs in its first round of assessment. Both SUVs passed the test with flying colours achieving a full 5-star rating. Now for its second round of assessment, the agency is set to crash test 6 cars including 3  Maruti and 3 Hyundai models. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

Maruti Grand Vitara crash test

Maruti’s flagship SUV model in India, the Grand Vitara is the next car to undergo crash testing. Built on the Global-C platform, the 2024 Grand Vitara is expected to become the safest Maruti Suzuki car in India. In terms of safety features, the Grand Vitara comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill hold assist, seat belt pre-tensioner & force limiter and ISOFIX mounts, which are mandatory for the Bharat NCAP test. Higher variants of the SUV offer up to 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera and a head-up display.

Talking about the segment, the Grand Vitara faces stiff competition from models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun. Currently, the Skoda/Volkswagen Twins are the only SUVs to receive a full 5-star rating in this segment.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti’s most popular SUV model, the Brezza is the next car to undergo crash testing in India. Operating in the compact SUV segment, this Maruti SUV is dominated by the Tata Nexon which offers better features and safety. Trying to claw back lost sales, Maruti is expecting a good crash test rating on the Brezza.

Built on the famed Global-C platform, the 2024 Maruti Brezza offers dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill hold assist, seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters and ISOFIX child seat restraint system as standard. Previously, Global NCAP had crash-tested the Maruti Brezza and awarded it 4 stars in adult occupant protection and 2 stars for child occupant protection. Pricing for the new model starts from Rs 9.72 lakh and extends up to Rs 16.63 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The last Maruti car on this list is the Baleno, a premium hatchback. Built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, the 2024 Maruti Baleno offers standard safety equipment which includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP with hill hold assist, 3-point seat belt for all passengers, seat belt pre-tensioner with force limiter and ISOFIX anchorages among others.

Higher variants of the Baleno offer 6-airbags as an option along with HUD and a 360-degree camera. First launched in 2015, the new Maruti Baleno has not undergone crash testing till now, while its budget counterpart, the Maruti Swift has been crash tested returning a rather poor 1-star rating.

Hyundai Exter

Hyundai Exter is expected to be the first car from the brand to undergo crash testing under the new Bharat NCAP protocol. Launched in 2023, the Exter is Hyundai’s smallest SUV model and offers a host of standard safety features. Built on the Hyundai-Kia K1 platform, the new SUV offers 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC with hill start assist, vehicle stability management and 3-point seat belts for all passengers and front seat belt pre-tensioners among others as standard. While the Exter offers most safety features, Hyundai has decided to skip ISOFIX seat anchors in the base variant of the model.

The Exter faces stiff competition from the Tata Punch, which is one of the cheapest 5-star rated cars in the country, despite the brand offering just two airbags as standard.

Hyundai Creta

India’s favourite SUV, the Hyundai Creta is the next car to undergo a crash test under Bharat NCAPs rules. Recently updated in 2024, the new model offers a host of standard and advanced features, enhancing the overall safety of the SUV.

Standard safety features on the all-new Creta include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP with hill start assist, VSM, ISOFIX, TPMS, rear disk brake, 3-point seat belts for all passengers and seat belt pre-tensioner with force limiter as standard. Higher variants of the model also come provided with level 2 ADAS with functions like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring and more. Previously, Global NCAP crash-tested the pre-facelift Creta in India and awarded the car with a 3-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection.

But based on the new Hyundai Verna’s recent performance at the crash testing, we can expect the Creta to also provide better safety and protection.

Hyundai Tucson

The last car on the list is the flagship Hyundai SUV, the Tucson. Launched in 2022, the car was crash tested by Latin NCAP in August 2022 where it scored 0-star due to a lack of side airbags, ESP and three-point seat belts for all passengers. Post the crash test, Hyundai updated the 2024 Tucson to offer 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP with hill-start assist and VSM, TPMS and ISOFIX as standard.

While the made-in-India model is yet to undergo any crash testing, the global model has been rated 3-star in adult occupant protection. So which car crash test result are you looking forward the most?
