Earlier this month, Tata launched the much-awaited Nexon facelift and Nexon EV facelift. Tata has gone one step above by offering a unique design and several segment-first features. Along with that, Tata has also offered a variety of variants for customers to choose from according to their preferences. Still, the Nexon facelift misses out on one thing. Can you guess this thing? It is a CNG option. However, a new video showcases that CNG could come in the future. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Tata Nexon i-CNG.

i-CNG confirmed?

Tata Nexon CNG instrument cluster

In a reel shared online, a person can be seen checking out the Nexon.ev. However, its instrument cluster weirdly showcases a CNG bar. Manufacturers generally do a lot of part-sharing and that can be seen even on the Nexon and Nexon.ev as they share the digital instrument cluster. It seems like there was a glitch with the code that led to it showcasing CNG. The major point here is that Tata has added CNG into the backend, hinting that we could see it in the future.

Tata CNG plan

In our recent interview with Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, he stated that CNG will become a major player in the future at the cost of diesel engines. So it makes sense that Nexon CNG is in the pipeline.

Currently, only the Brezza offers CNG in sub-compact SUV space. In that, you have to compromise on space. That shouldn’t be the case on the Nexon with its twin-cylinder technology. It will offer the convenience of CNG and also good enough boot space.

Tata Nexon CNG – What to expect?

Tata Nexon CNG

It will be interesting if Tata gives the CNG option on the turbo petrol engine. Currently, no manufacturer offers a turbo petrol CNG option. Some manufacturers like Kia & Hyundai have flirted with this idea, but nothing has come to fruition. So if Tata does this, the Nexon could become the first turbo petrol CNG car in India. Another alternative for Tata is to give the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine from the Altroz CNG and Punch CNG. Either way, we can expect a price hike of around Rs 80k to Rs 1 lakh over similarly specced petrol variants. Currently, the pricing of the Nexon CNG starts from Rs 9.55 lakh and goes to Rs 18.72 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). When can we expect the Nexon CNG? Probably in the next 6 to 8 months.
