Tata Harrier and Tata Safari are two flagship offerings from Tata Motors. These are the SUVs which have a DNA of Land Rover platform and are known for their ride quality. Over the years Tata has thoroughly updated them with new features and technology. The duo has done well against the MG Hector and Hector Plus and fares decently against the Mahindra XUV 700. Strong points of both these SUVs is the road presence, ride quality, and list of features they offer. A pretty all-rounder offering right? But what if we tell you that no, don’t buy the Harrier & Safari now?

Why?

Yes it might sound weird but you shouldn’t buy them now because anytime soon you might get to buy a better, more upmarket and fully refreshed Tata Harrier and Tata Safari. Why? Both these SUVs are set to receive a major facelift with redesigned exteriors and refreshed interiors. And no, you will not have to wait for long as reports say that Tata Motors could launch the Harrier/Safari facelift before the festive season or probably by the end of this year. But will the updates really be worth the wait? We assume it is definitely worth waiting for the facelifts.

Not long ago we wrote a story on why buying Tata Nexon makes no sense now and after the Nexon and Nexon EV facelifts were revealed, you might have got the answers.

Similarly with the Harrier and Safari we could see significant upgrades. The exterior and interior design could get completely new design language and the spy images support our claim.

What to expect with the Harrier & Safari facelift?

On the exterior, they could get redesigned front and rear bumpers, completely new headlamps setup with LED unit, new set of alloy wheels, connected LED tail lamps and dedicated housing for the rear reflectors. The design could be very much similar to the Harrier EV that was showcased in the Auto Expo 2023, and doesn’t it look more stylish than the outgoing Harrier?

Even the interiors are expected to get refreshed with some added features. A major change would be the steering wheel. From a few spy shots we were able to see the steering wheel of the test mules of Safari and the steering column looked very similar to that of the Sierra EV showcased in the Auto Expo 2023. It is a 4-spoke unit that displays Tata Logo at the centre.

Also, other features like updated graphics for the digital instrument cluster, rotary-styled gear knob, voice assisted sunroof, LED headlamps and 12+ inch touchscreen system are expected to be included.

Harrier & Safari – Engine remains unchanged

The powertrain option is assumed to be the same as before. Which means that they will continue to get the 2.0-Litre Diesel engine that churns out 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission. A 1.5-Litre turbo petrol engine was expected to make its way to these SUVs but that is not happening as we got to know recently in our interview with Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. He clearly stated that the petrol engine will debut on the Curvv coming next year. After that, we could see the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine on the Safari and Harrier.

When is it coming?

As mentioned before, Tata Motors could launch the facelift of Tata Harrier and Tata Safari in the next 2 months. Also, according to reports, Tata dealerships have unofficially started to accept bookings for the new Harrier and Safari. The booking amount for the Harrier is Rs 21,000 while for the Safari it is Rs 25,000. With facelifts, the prices could also get a hike and we can expect a price hike of Rs 60k to 70k depending upon the variants. Currently, the Tata Harrier starts from Rs 18.70 lakh and goes to Rs 29.87 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). While the Tata Safari starts from Rs 19.34 lakh and goes to Rs 30.75 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
