Fuel efficiency has always been an integral part of the car-buying experience in India. Now affordable cars from Maruti have been champions in this regard. Still, not everyone is looking for that. Some people want fully loaded cars with good mileage and that is where hybrid cars come into the picture. The last few years have seen launches of some hybrid cars like the Innova Hycross to City. So do people buy them, and what are their sales figures? In today’s article, let’s talk about hybrid car sales.
Toyota Innova Hycross – 7,073 units
Toyota took a major gamble by launching the hybrid Innova in India. But from the sales figures, it seems that the gamble is working. The Innova HyCross was the best-selling strong hybrid car in Q2 2023. It commands a 49% market share in this sector. This is quite remarkable, as it is also the most expensive hybrid car. Toyota would have sold even more if not for production constraints that have led to it stopping bookings of the higher variants of the HyCross. The HyCross comes with a claimed mileage of 23.24 kmpl. The pricing of the HyCross hybrid starts from Rs 30.65 lakh and goes to Rs 36.56 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
Hybrid car sales – Maruti Grand Vitara – 3,763 units
The Maruti Grand Vitara is the second car on this list. Maruti sold 3,763 units of the Grand Vitara Hybrid in Q2 2023. If we compared overall sales, then the Grand Vitara hybrid only accounts for 10% of total Grand Vitara sales. The Grand Vitara hybrid comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine capable of producing 91bhp and 122Nm of torque. This has a claimed mileage of 27.97kmpl. The pricing of the Grand Vitara hybrid starts from Rs 21.35 lakh and goes to Rs 23.27 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
Toyota HyRyder – 2,251 units
Like the Grand Vitara, the HyRyder is also selling in good numbers. People are preferring to buy the HyRyder hybrid due to Toyota’s expertise in this segment. Also, Toyota has done a good design-wise to differentiate it from the Grand Vitara. It shares the specs with the Grand Vitara and also comes with the same claimed mileage. Toyota sold 2,251 units in Q2 2023. The pricing of the HyRyder hybrid starts from Rs 19.58 lakh and goes to Rs 23.70 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
Hybrid car sales – Honda City – 569 units
The Honda City was the first strong hybrid car in the country. Sadly for Honda, the sales of City as a whole are down and that has certainly affected the sales of hybrids too. Honda sold only 569 units of the City hybrid in Q2 2023. The City hybrid comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated that produces 96bhp max power and 127Nm of max torque. This has a claimed mileage of 27.13kmpl. The pricing of the City hybrid starts from Rs 22.18 lakh and goes to Rs 24.11 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
