1. Maruti Jimny
Launched in June 2023, Maruti Jimny is the latest entrant in the 4-by-4 SUV segment.
It was one of the most anticipated launches from Maruti as the Jimny was expected to carry the legacy of the famous Maruti Gypsy.
Powering the Jimny is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 103 bhp and 134 NM of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed Manual and a 4-speed Automatic transmission.
The car sits high with a ground clearance of 210 MM which makes it capable of going over almost everything. What makes the car further capable is the approach angle of 36 degrees, departure angle of 50 degrees and ramp over angle of 24 degrees.

On the safety front, it is the only car in the list to offer 6 Airbags but it is not yet tested by Global Ncap so we have no crash test ratings at the moment.

Best 4X4 SUVs under 20 Lakh – 2. Mahindra Thar
The second SUV on the list is the most popular and revolutionary SUV, the Mahindra Thar. It is revolutionary as it be your daily driver while being capable of hardcore off roader. Thar commands excellent road presence, thanks to the wide stance and aggressive styling.
Apart from the aggressive stance, Thar is a fun to drive car and although you might feel cumbersome to drive inside city traffic, the spritiy engine will keep you excited.
Talking about engines, Thar is available with both petrol and diesel engines. It gets a 2.2L mHawk turbocharged diesel engine that produces 130 bhp and 300 NM of torque. You also get options for 6 speed manual and 6 speed automatic transmission.
The second engine is a 2.0L mStallion TGDI petrol engine which produces 150 bhp of power. However, it produces 300 NM of torque for the manual and 320 NM of torque for the automatic variants. Both manual and automatic transmissions are the 6-speed units.
Other important features include Front Disc Brakes, Tyre direction Monitoring System, Manual shift lever for 4WD,and Brake Lock Differential.
The car is equipped with only 2 Airbags but it is important to know that it has scored a total of 4-stars in the Global Ncap crash test.
The ground clearance is high at 226 MM while the approach angle is 41.2 degrees, departure angle of 36 degrees and ramp over angle of 26.2 degrees, making it a capable go anywhere SUV.
The on-road Mumbai price of the Mahindra Thar starts at 16.60 Lakhs and goes up to 20.34 Lakhs.
With Thar you also get option for soft top roof wherein you can enjoy your safari by folding down the roof.
Also for those who want the presence of the Thar at an affordable price and if you are not a hardcore off roader, you can get a Thar RWD variant which is available at an affordable price.
3. Force Gurkha
The Force company has been trying to do their best with the Force Gurkha. The car has an amazing road presence with tall and G-Wagon inspired styling which surely stands out in the crowd.
The SUV can be a good off roader but driving one around the city or out on highway can be a struggle. The reason is the underpowered engine. Force Gurkha is powered by a 2.5L diesel engine which produces just 90 bhp and 250 NM of torque.
The engine is mated to a sole 5-speed manual transmission with no automatic option on offer.
For off roading Force Gurkha offers ground clearance of 205 MM with approach angle of 37 degrees, departure angle of 25 degrees and ramp over angle of 25 degrees.
On the features front the Gurkha gets Mechanically Actuated Differential Lock, Front Disc Brakes, Hydraulic Power Steering Wheel, and Factory Fitted Snorkel.
Also the Gurkha sits on 245/70 R16 steel wheels.
The car is also equipped with 2-Airbags and there is no clarification on the safety as the car is yet to be tested by Global Ncap crash test facility.
The SUV is available with only one variant and is priced at 18.45 Lakhs (on road, Mumbai).
Best 4X4 SUVs under 20 Lakh – 4. Mahindra Scorpio N
To take your family in utmost comfort for highway runs as well as for off roading, the Mahindra Scorpio N could be the SUV you are looking for.
Stretching your budget just over 20 Lakhs, you will get an excellent all rounder product.
With Scorpio N you get a powerhouse 2.2L mHawk engine that produces 172 bhp and a whopping 400 NM of torque at this price point. However, you only get an option of 6-speed manual transmission with no automatic on offer in this Z4 variant.
You do get features like Manual shift-electronic, Electronic differential lock, and comes with all four disc brakes. While the tyres on offer are 245/65 R17 steel wheels.
To have one, you will have to spend an on road price of 21.53 Lakhs in Mumbai, but at this price what you get is a powerful engine, comfortable ride quality, and a capable off roader.
