The prices of petrol and diesel have stabilised. Still, they are quite high and with the low-efficiency numbers, it has become quite a task to own a car in India. This is why people are seeking to buy a CNG car. They are a lot more economical to own than a petrol or diesel car. Also, they are cheaper than a hybrid option. However, one thing that puts off a lot of people is no automatic CNG cars option. So will we ever see a CNG automatic car? In today’s article, let’s find out.

Why the need?

As mentioned above, people are looking to buy CNG cars. Tata recently updated its CNG product lineup with its twin-cylinder technology. So CNG is surely on the rise, but CNG cars are mostly bought for city travel. With the congestion in cities, people are looking for CNG automatic options. No manufacturers even offer AMT on their CNG options. So why is it so? Continue reading for this reason.

Why no CNG automatic?

Automatic gearboxes are quite complex. Even an AMT gearbox is quite complex compared to a manual. They generally make the automatic gear shifts, judging the engine behaviour and the throttle response. With CNG that gets a bit hard, as CNG affects the delivery of the power and throttle. It is not that manufacturers can’t do it, but that will be a lot of added investment. Though there is demand, it is still not enough to warrant the extra investment.

Kia was testing some of its turbo petrol cars with CNG. For context, Kia’s turbo options only come with iMT and DCT options. But that didn’t materialise. Currently, the demand for automatic CNG cars doesn’t warrant the hefty investment required from manufacturers. However, as the market grows the demand will continue to increase, and maybe at that time, we could see a CNG automatic car.
