Really happening?

Mahindra has an ambitious plan in the SUV segment. But the brand is currently preoccupied with the Thar 5-door and its ‘Born Electric’ cars. Its ‘Born Electric’ lineup is filled with Coupe SUVs. So has Mahindra sidelined the XUV900? That we can’t pinpoint, but there surely is a market for an affordable coupe car. Tata is already doing that with the Curvv. So it makes sense for Mahindra to work on affordable coupe car in the form of XUV900.

XUV e9

First let’s talk about the XUV.e9, which was showcased by Mahindra last year. Why are we talking about this car? Dimension-wise, the e9 perfectly fits the bill. It is 4790mm in length, 1905mm in width & 1690mm in height. This will position the XUV900 over the XUV700. Another point to note is that the XUV e8 is the electric version of the XUV700, but the XUV.e9 doesn’t have an ICE counterpart. So it makes sense that the XUV900 could be based on the XUV.e9. Still the XUV.e9 will be a grounds-up EV and its petrol/diesel version will not be simple task.

What else to expect?

Mahindra showcased the Aero Concept at the Auto Expo of 2016. However, that was a long time ago, and we expect a radical new design now. We could see c-shaped DRLs with an aggressive grille similar to the XUV700 on the XUV900. Mahindra could also try to blend in the design of XUV700 & e9 on the XUV900. Being a coupe-SUV, we can expect sporty bumpers and side skirts. Another major change will be in the side profile due to the tapering roofline. Mahindra could also give it a spoiler to enhance the look. Engine duties could be handled by a 2.2-litre diesel (182bhp/450Nm) and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine (197bhp/380Nm). Transmission options should include an manual and an automatic option.

Mahindra XUV900 launch – When to expect?

As stated above, Mahindra has its hands filled with a lot of upcoming products. At its FutureScape event, it stated that it plans to launch its first ‘Born Electric Cars’ the XUV.e8 by December 2024. The XUV.e9 is expected to be launched by April 2025. So the XUV900 could be launched mostly after the XUV.e9. Also currently, there is no concrete information about its launch. We may or may not see the XUV900 in its production spec. What about the pricing? Mahindra could price the XUV900 around the Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh mark (on-road, Mumbai).
