Maruti as a manufacturer has ruled the roast in the Indian market. Even with the criticism it faces for safety, it continues to be the leading manufacturer in the country. Such has been the dominance of Maruti that if we add the sales figures of the next four manufacturers (Hyundai + Tata + Mahindra + Kia) they are equal to the sales figures of Maruti. Still, there are some segments where Maruti is still weak. In today’s article, let’s talk about Maruti sales.

Sedans

Maruti has had some strong performers in the sedan segment over the years. But the Ciaz was one of its biggest successes. Since its launch in 2014, it has raked in good sales. However now, the Ciaz has become a shadow of its former self. In March, Maruti sold only 300 units of the Ciaz, which is abysmal and more so for Maruti. Yes, the sedan market has shrunken, but still, there is hope with the launches of Virtus, Slavia and the all-new Verna. The major reason why Ciaz is struggling is it has become outdated. So Maruti can update it and give a new lease of life to the Ciaz.

Some affordable hatchbacks

Hatchbacks are the bread and butter for Maruti in the country. Most of its top sellers belong to this category, but there are some slow sellers. For instance, the Celerio, which once easily raked in 10k+ plus sales is struggling at 4000-odd sales. The new-generation model hasn’t helped at all. Maruti is also struggling with S-Presso and Ignis both recording sales of just 2000. Maruti will either need to update them or discontinue them to free up some production space for its other models.

Maruti sales – Premium 7-seater

The affordable 7-seater segment is well and truly dominated by Maruti with the Ertiga. Maruti wanted to venture into a more premium segment, so it brought in the XL6. The XL6 started well with 5k to 6k sales per month, but with the launch of the Carens, its sales have dried up. In March, Maruti sold only 1,754 units of the XL6. So Maruti will have to figure out a way to improve its sales. Another premium 7-seater that Maruti will be soon launching is the badge-engineered Innova HyCross. This could give Maruti an edge in the segment.
