Mahindra Thar 5 door to get 2WD!
The Mahindra Thar has set its benchmark in the rugged SUV segment. Now we know that Mahindra is working on a bigger version of the Thar. This 5-door version has been spotted several times in testing. It is almost certain to come with a 4×4 setup, but we could even see a 2WD version. Why do we think so? In today’s article, let’s talk about the Thar 5-door 2WD.
2WD?
Recently, Mahindra launched the new Thar with the rear-wheel drive setup. With this rear-wheel-drive setup, Mahindra is targeting users who want a unique car and not necessarily a hardcore off-roaders. This is quite logical as most Thar buyers rarely take their cars off-road. Using this same logic, Mahindra could launch a RWD version of the Thar 5-door to cater to such a crowd. This will make the Thar 5-door more accessible for prospective customers.

The Thar 5-door is confirmed to be based on the modified ladder-on-frame chassis like the Scorpio-N. With so many sightings, we know it is not getting any major design changes over the normal Thar. Still, these are pre-production models and the final design could have several changes. The same can be said about the interiors. Specification-wise, the Thar 5-door could share its engine options with the Scorpio-N. So we can expect a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine (200bhp/370Nm) and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine (172bhp/370Nm). Feature-wise, we could see a new centre armrest, more storage spaces and a bigger infotainment system.
Thar 5-door 2WD – Launch timeline
There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the launch of the Thar 5-door. Some reports are claiming it could be launched in the coming months, while some are saying it will be in the second half of 2023. From the recent spotting, the second option seems to be the logical answer. Mahindra could be looking to unveil the car on 15th August as it did with the current Thar. The prices could be unveiled a few months after the unveiling.
