The Mahindra Thar truly revolutionised the lifestyle SUV segment in the country. Since its launch in 2020, it has become a staple in the SUV segment. But now the Thar could face its biggest competitor in the form of the upcoming Maruti Jimny 5-door. To counter this, Mahindra has today launched the Thar 2WD variant. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Mahindra Thar 2WD.

Variants and pricing

New Mahindra Thar

Mahindra has priced the 2WD Thar very aggressively keeping in mind the upcoming Jimny. The pricing of the Thar 2WD diesel starts from Rs 9.99 lakh, while the petrol AT costs Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The diesel variants start lower due to the smaller engine and new taxation. The variant lineup of the Thar 2WD is LX and AX.

What’s changed?

The overall silhouette of the Thar 2WD is the same, but one obvious change is the missing 4×4 badging. Mahindra has also added two new colours blazing brown and Everest white colours to the Thar 2WD. In the interiors, we get a new storage space in the centre console and a faux carbon finish near the AC vents. Under the hood, we have a new 1.5-litre CRDi engine from the XUV300 capable of producing 117bhp & 300Nm of torque. This engine only comes with a manual gearbox option.

What’s the same?

As stated Mahindra has kept most of the things the same on the Thar 2WD. The petrol engine will continue to be the 2.0-litre petrol engine capable of producing 150bhp and 320Nm of torque. This engine will come only with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Feature-wise, it also continues with the features like a touchscreen infotainment system, roof-mounted speakers, cruise control, rear parking sensors and ESP.
