Maruti had a mega 2022 in terms of new car launches. It also launched several new SUVs like the updated Brezza and the Grand Vitara. But still, Maruti lacks a proper competitor to the likes of Hyundai Alcazar and Tata Safari. To counter this, Maruti is working on a new car that will be essentially a 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Rs 20 lakh 7-seater.

Maruti’s plan

20 lakh 7-seater

As stated above, Maruti lacks a 7-seater SUV option in its lineup. So Maruti is working on a 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara codenamed Y17. This 7-seater Grand Vitara will add another option to Maruti’s ever-increasing SUV portfolio. It will also help Maruti take on the Hyundai Alcazar and to some extent the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

Changes

The Y17 will be based on the same Global C platform as the Grand Vitara but is expected to get a longer wheelbase to accommodate the extra row. Could we see any design changes? Maruti could give it a slightly different styling to differentiate the two cars similar to what Hyundai does with the Creta and Alcazar. Engine specifications are also expected to remain the same on the 7-seater version. Maruti will have to tweak the hybrid setups to accommodate the third row. Feature-wise, we can expect it to be feature loaded with some additions like ADAS expected.

So when is this Maruti 7-seater coming? For now, the car is still in its early stages of development. Before this 7-seater, Maruti plans to launch the badge-engineered Innova Hycross and also the production version of eVX. Tentatively, Maruti plans to launch this 7-seater Grand Vitara by 2025 manufacturing at its new under-construction facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Pricing-wise, it could be around Rs 2 lakh more expensive than the 5-seater model.
