The SUV market is flourishing at a rapid pace with the demand pent up for most of the models. To some extent, the SUV market has picked up due to the launch of the Creta. The Creta has been ruthless in its segment decimating most of its competition. Now it seems that another SUV has fallen prey to Creta’s dominance and is soon to be discontinued. Have you guessed the SUV? It is the Nissan Kicks. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Creta rival.

Why?

In April 2023, the RDE or Real Driving Emission norms will kick in. In RDE cars will have to achieve emission targets in real-world conditions. So why are we talking about this in a Kicks story? These upcoming norms are going to spell doom for several cars in India. Manufacturers will have to make big investments to ready their engines for these RDE emission tests. Kicks being such a slow seller for the brand, Nissan doesn’t think it is worth upgrading its petrol engine just for one car. Nissan doesn’t use this engine on any other cars in its lineup.

Creta rival – Kicks as a product

The Kicks has been quite a competent product, but it never reflected in its sales figures. In November, Nissan sold just 3 units of the Kicks. Even in its prime days, the Kicks was nowhere near the sales of the Hyundai Creta. So why did it never click with the customers? It was due to uninspiring design and outdated interiors. Another reason for its low sales has been the discontinuation of the 1.5-litre diesel engine. Sales of the car never recovered after 2020, when the 1.5-litre diesel engine was axed due to the BS6 norms.

What could replace it?

Nissan already has plans in place to replace the Kicks. In October, it unveiled three new cars for the Indian market. In these three cars, the Juke could be the perfect replacement for the Kicks and a worthy competitor to the Hyundai Creta. There is uncertainty if Nissan ever brings it to India. The brand first wants to conduct an analysis identifying if there is a need for the Juke in India. If launched, the Juke could find buyers due to its quirky design and features like 360-degree parking, premium Bose sound system and an 8-inch infotainment system. Also, the Juke comes with a hybrid setup pitting it against the likes of the Maruti Grand Vitara & Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
