After the success of its SUVs – Punch and Nexon, Tata Motors is planning to steal the thunder of the Hyundai Creta. Yes, Tata is planning to bring a new SUV in the C-segment category taking on the likes of Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks, and more. The name ‘Blackbird’ was seen echoing in the automotive scene and today we will be discussing the same. Let’s talk about the mythical and always ‘upcoming Tata Blackbird’ today!

Upcoming Tata Blackbird – Plan cancelled!

Upcoming Tata Blackbird

Whilst we see the C-segment category of India, it has some potential cars with a multitude of features. So, to tackle such a segment, Tata has to bring something equally potential. This duty was to be done by the Blackbird. Tata was to partner with a Chinese company ‘Cherry’ to bring its Creta rival. However, with the recent geopolitical tensions between India and China, this partnership went South axing project ‘Blackbird’.

What is Tata’s plan?

The zest to bring a C-segment SUV was still the same. The eradication of Blackbird was like taking one step behind but Tata knew that by hook or crook it had to bring a C-SUV. Tata went back to Nexon’s X1 platform and tweaked it according to the needs of this segment. The outcome was a new coupe SUV with all the modern-day elements. This new SUV is known as Curvv and was showcased earlier this year. Basically built on the upgraded X1 platform, this new car is set to break new grounds for the homegrown automaker.

Tata Blackbird – Upcoming successor

So though the Blackbird never saw the sunlight, its upcoming successor is likely to go all out. This new upcoming Tata SUV is likely to get all the essential SUV characteristics and Tata has claimed that the production vehicle would highly resemble the concept car. To be precise at 97%, this is likely to be one of the closest production models compared to its concept.

Tata Curvv – What else to expect?

Tata Curvv is set to get a coupe SUV design. This means that it would get a tapering roofline thus rear seat headroom could be less. Other than this, if we move on to the feature list, this has to be at par with the rivals. It is expected to get ventilated seats, a big infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, and more.

Talking about its engine, Tata can add an upgraded version of the 1.2-litre turbo petrol. This upgraded version is expected to get a horsepower increase to 140bhp. Furthermore, it also has a 1.5-litre turbo petrol in the works which is likely to debut in Harrier and Safari facelift. This engine could also be a powerful option with a figure reaching at 160bhp. If we talk about the diesel, we have the 1.5-litre diesel from the Nexon.

Launch and Pricing

One thing to note is that the Curvv would be launched first with a battery setup. This EV setup is expected to return a real-world range of 400 km. Tata is likely to launch this EV powertrain at the end of 2023 or early 2024. Moreover, the ICE options could be made available after 6-8months of the Curvv EV launch. Some reports also suggest that it is touted to get a CNG option. What about pricing? The pricing is expected to range between Rs 12 lakh to 22 lakh.
