EV sales have picked up significantly in the last few years. New buyers have started to consider EVs as a serious buying option. This change has forced manufacturers to start developing their new EVs quickly now. Toyota and Maruti have been slow to approach the EV sector. They have however started focusing more in this direction. Globally, Toyota has a partnership with Subaru and has launched the Solterra. So could this car come to India? In today’s article, let’s talk about Maruti’s first EV.

The Solterra comes with a sharp front design. We have a closed grille with a black exterior outline. It gets black cladding on the bumpers that extends into the headlamp. We have a new air dam and fog lamps placed adjacent to them. The side profile gets curvy bits. The rear has inverted C-shaped tail lamps with a blacked-out connected strip in the middle. In the interiors, it gets a modern look with a floating infotainment cluster and infotainment system.

Specifications

The Subaru Solterra is one of the most advanced EVs in Subaru’s lineup. It comes with a dual-motor setup that delivers 218bhp and 337Nm of torque. What about the range? The Solterra gets a 72.8kWh battery pack that delivers a claimed range of 368km. Also, Subaru claims a 0 to 80% charge time of 56 minutes on a fast DC charger. The Solterra is quick with a 0-100kmph time of 6.5 seconds.

Maruti EV – Significance to India

The Solterra is not coming to India. But it holds a lot of significance for the Indian market. To get context, Maruti and Toyota are developing an EV condemned YY8 for the Indian market. This YY8 will be based on the 27PL platform, which is derived from the 40PL platform. Solterra is based on the 40PL platform. The 40PL platform is developed jointly by Toyota, Mazda, Daihatsu, Subaru, Suzuki, Denso and Hino. So the YY8 could take some inspiration from Solterra.

In India this car could go up against the Kia EV6, Jaguar I-Pace and the upcoming Volkswagen ID4, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Skoda Enyaq IV.
