Mahindra Thar has become the ubiquitous lifestyle off-roader in India. It has got a charm of its own which is hardly offered by any other cars. You can say there are some overall better vehicles but they all come at a premium cost. Now, while the Thar enjoys no competition in its segment, Tata is working on a rival whose nameplate is enough to terrify the Thar. Lets take a look at this new Mahindra Thar rival.

As Tata has already shown the Sierra concept at the Auto Expo 2020, it is no doubt that the homegrown automaker is working to bring back its ‘Sierra nameplate. Expected to launch with both – EV as well as ICE powertrains, the new car would be a game changer in the offroader segment.
Mahindra Thar rival – Design
Tata has often been tight-lipped regarding the progress of the car. The concept shown at the Expo was quite identical to the original car with a split rear glass setup that depicts the long single-pane rear glass of the original Sierra. This iconic design of the Sierra has carried forward alongwith some new modern-day design elements. So, we can spot the split headlamp setup, flush door handles, continuous LED bar at the rear, and more.
Features
The Sierra is likely to be a premium offering from Tata. Even if we say that it could rival the Thar with its body structure, integrity, offroad capabilities, etc but its feature list could be in a different ball game. Why do we say this? The Sierra is likely to get big touchscreen system, premium sound system, multi-regen mode, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, and more.
Mahindra Thar rival -Specifications
The new Sierra is expected to base on the Gen 2 -Sigma architecture. Talking about this platform, it is a heavily modified version of the ALFA platform. This same ALFA platform can be seen in existing Tata cars like the Altroz, Punch, etc. This could only throw light on the Sierra getting ICE engine options. Therefore, we can expect the new 1.5-litre turbo petrol which is being developed by Tata and also the existing 2.0-litre Kryotec used in the Harrier and Safari. Moreover, Tata has also confirmed that it would be getting an EV setup with a claimed range of 500km to 600km.
Mahindra Thar rival – Launch and Price
Before the Sierra EV, Tata is expected to bring the Curvv and Avinya-based cars. Only then we can expect the Sierra to uncover which could be around 2025. What about pricing? Nothing can be said about the pricing as of now but we can expect it to start just under Rs 20lakh (ex-showroom).
