Tata recently wrapped up the launch of its most affordable electric vehicle, the Tiago EV. This EV aims at drawing more customers to the new-age of mobility, making EVs more accessible. Tata has plans to have a portfolio of 10 EVs by 2026, including the existing ones. Tata has already shared its Gen-2 and Gen-3 EV architectures that underpinned the Curvv & Avinya, respectively. Now, major news has emerged regarding Tata working on 4X4 SUVs. So, whats the complete plan and what does Tata have in store? Everything in today’s article.

What is the big news?

Tata 4X4 SUVs

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, recently confirmed to PTI that the brand is looking to introduce 4X4 technology on its future electric vehicles. The brand is planning this technology with SUVs that will sit above the Nexon range. Mechanically, none of the Tata SUVs come with 4X4 capability, not even the Safari.

Tata 4X4 SUVs – Why is this a big news?

Tata has always had capable SUVs. Even the ones available currently come based on tried and tested platforms, whether it be the Nexon, which is based on Indica’s X1 platform or the Harrier & Safari which come based on the Omega-Arc platform derived from Land Rover’s D8 platform. However, none of these cars as mentioned above get the 4X4 capability. However, with this news breaking out, there is strong hope that atleast the electric versions of some SUVs will get this capability.

Taking into consideration the fact that SUVs above Nexon are the ones that could get 4X4, means that we could see 4X4 with SUVs like Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV, Safari EV (if it is in the plans), etc. However, Shailesh Chandra has made it clear that the brand will first gauge the response of Harrier & Safari EVs (in terms of sales) and then move towards bringing 4X4. However, this is clearly good news for people who have been waiting for a 4X4 from Tata.

How far is Tata with its ’10 EV plan’?

Vivek Srivatsa, Head of Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy, Tata Motors, confirmed in a conversation with us that four cars are already on sale under this ’10 EV plan’. When asked, he mentioned that Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Xpres-T EV & Nexon EV are the four cars that are already in the market. One interesting thing to note here is that the Nexon EV Prime & Nexon EV Max are cumulatively considered under the ‘Nexon EV’ range.

The Head of Marketing also hinted that the brand could launch two new EVs per year and could also aim at completing this ’10 EV plan’ before 2026, clearly giving out that 2026 is just a tentative year.
