The new Maruti EV has been in the news for sometime now, and we already have a decent amount of idea about it. For starters, the EV will be a mid-size SUV and will be similar in dimensions to the Grand Vitara. Being a ground-up EV, it will come with a long wheelbase to accommodate the floor-mounted battery packs. What else do we know? The YY8 will have a high level of localisation to price it competitively.

Even the battery pack will be locally assembled from cells imported from BYD. For this purpose, Maruti & Toyota have set up a battery assembly plant in Gujarat. The local assembly will give a major cost advantage to Toyota and Maruti. This EV will come based on the 27PL platform, which will be derived from 40PL electric skateboard, co-developed by seven Japanese automakers and suppliers.

Maruti’s plan

Maruti is taking a steady approach in the EV segment. It has stated that it only intends to enter the EV segment once the charging infrastructure is ready. For its first EV, Maruti has set a launch timeline of 2025. This was confirmed by Maruti Suzuki’s chairman, RC Bhargava. In the meantime, Maruti wants to focus on CNG & strong hybrids and not just solely depend on electrification. Yesterday, Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for Suzuki EV Battery Plant, Gujarat.
