The EV segment is slowly and steadily gaining ground in the market. All manufacturers in India are coming up with EVs or atleast concepts. However, one manufacturer who has been reluctant to enter the EV space has also started developing an EV in collaboration with Toyota. But before that, Maruti was testing the WagonR EV. However, the WagonR EV had been absent for a very long time. Now all of sudden this EV has again spotted testing. So what is Maruti planning? In today’s article, let’s talk about this affordable Maruti EV.

What was spotted?

The Maruti WagonR EV was spotted after a very long time. The spied car is completely undisguised with no camouflage. From the looks of it, it looks like a production-ready car. What else can we spot? We can see the closed grille and halogen headlamps. Maruti has placed the fog lamps on the bumper of the car highlighted by black element running across the bumper. The side profile is identical to regular WagonR. At the rear, we have blacked-out tail lamps, giving it a premium look.

Change of plan?

The WagonR EV has been spotted a lot of times before. Maruti had been testing the WagonR EV for nearly two to three years. So what is different now? According to earlier reports, Maruti had axed the WagonR EV project in favour of a new mid-size electric SUV. The reason behind this was the pricing of the WagonR EV. Profitability with an aggressive pricing was a big question. However, the recent spotting leaves us with another question mark. Is Maruti actually testing this for business purpose or just for internal component testing? Only time will tell. In its current partnership with Toyota, the Japanese brand is leading the EV product development. Toyota is pushing forward with new electric vehicles from the ground up.

Maruti affordable EV – Will we ever see it?

So the last question, will we ever see the WagonR EV on the roads? This is tricky to answer Maruti is favouring the mid-size electric SUV. However, that EV is not hitting the roads until 2025. Could Maruti fill the gap with the WagonR EV? Only time can tell that. But for that to happen, Maruti will have to see a clear demand for an affordable EV as well as better infrastructure. Will that happen within the next two years? What do you think? Do let us know in the comments.
