Globally, manufacturers like Tesla, BYD and Volkswagen are leading the EV race. Hyundai and Kia are slowly and steadily catching up with the big guys in the EV segment as well. Cars like the EV6 and IONIQ 5 are testimony to the brands’ big ambitions in the EV segment. The Kona EV is another important product in Hyundai’s portfolio. The car might have not been able to make a huge impact in the Indian market, but globally, it definitely is helping Hyundai achieve high sales. The car was yet to receive a major update. Now, we have obtained spy shots of the new Kona EV. In today’s article, let’s talk about this new Hyundai EV and what to expect from it.

What was spied on?

The test mule of the new-generation Hyundai Kona EV was spotted outside the Hyundai/Kia test centre in Germany. The spy shots were leaked by CarScoops. What do these images reveal? The test mule is almost identical to the ICE-powered Kona spotted earlier this year. But the Kona EV gets a square opening, most probably for the charging point. Another indicator of its EV nature is the absence of an exhaust pipe.

What else can we expect?

The ICE-powered Kona has been spotted numerous times, so we can expect some similarities with the Kona EV. It sports a bonnet-wide DRL strip like the Staria & Stargazer. The Kona EV will get a closed-off grille. What about the interiors? According to reports, it could get minimalistic interiors like the IONIQ 5. In terms of specifications, Hyundai is yet to reveal any details, but the Kona EV could share its specifications with the Kia Niro EV. The Niro EV gets a 200bhp electric motor paired with a 64kWh battery pack. This battery pack gives its a claimed range of 463km.

New Hyundai EV – Launch timeline

new Hyundai EV

Hyundai has been quite mum about the launch of the Kona. The brand recently updated the Kona for India, but not very heavily. Even the facelift has not been brought to India. According to rumours, Hyundai might unveil the ICE Kona and EV Kona in South Korea by the end of this year. Its global launch could happen early next year. So, can we expect an India launch? Looking at the current scenario, nothing can be commented as of now. Hyundai is yet to bet big on the IONIQ 5. There is a possibility that Hyundai would want to bank on IONIQ 5’s craze and draw some sales for the Kona EV. Could Hyundai then want to majorly update the Kona? Only time will tell.
