Mahindra had quite a head start in the EV segment. It had high hopes for cars like the Reva and eVerito, but sadly for Mahindra, these cars bombed in the market. After this, Mahindra had to take a step back from the EV segment. Mahindra knew that it had to do proper planning before re-entering this segment. Finally, Mahindra is ready to make a grand comeback in the EV segment with its Born Electric cars. But before that, the brand will be bringing the electric version of the XUV300 as XUV400 to the market. The XUV400 will be Mahindra’s first EV car after the hiatus, and the brand would definitely want it to succeed. For that, it will have to return good range figures. So what will it’s range be? In today’s article, let’s talk about the Mahindra XUV400 and our range expectations of this upcoming EV.

Mahindra XUV400 range expectations

Battery and powertrain information is limited for now. According to reports, it could get a 150bhp motor. What about the range figures? Mahindra could be using high-density NMC. What’s so special about these cells? These cells are said to deliver good range and performance figures. The XUV400 is an important product for Mahindra and the brand will be looking to make it a segment leader. The XUV400 could thus get range figures on par with the Tata Nexon EV Max or better. Currently, the Nexon EV Max has a claimed range of 437km. So Mahindra will mostly be trying to achieve a range figure somewhere around this for the XUV400.

What else do we know?

According to earlier reports, it is almost certain that the new SUV will be called XUV400. One interesting thing here is that the XUV400 will not be a sub-four-metre car like its ICE counterpart. It will be based on the original SsangYong Tivoli Platform. Why is Mahindra doing this? As EVs already have low taxation, Mahindra is looking to utilise this extra length for more boot space, something that the XUV300 struggles with. According to reports and rumours, the XUV400 is also expected to come with ADAS functionality. With ADAS, this SUV could really give a very tough fight to the competition.

Now one more thing to ponder upon. The XUV300 has some very strong elements, with one of them being the legroom in the cabin. The XUV300 is based on the Tivoli platform but with shortened body length. With the XUV400, Mahindra is looking to retain the original body length, which as mentioned above will enhance the boot space of this vehicle. One more thing that can be realistically expected from this EV is impressive legroom.

Launch timeline

The XUV400 has been spotted testing a few times. Also, a recent leak revealed its reworked tail lamps. The XUV400 is expected to be unveiled in the coming months (mostly around September). What about the pricing? With the new design and features, we expect Mahindra to price it somewhere between Rs 18 lakh to Rs 22 lakh (ex-showroom). Of late, Mahindra has been aggressive with its pricing, and we expect the same with the XUV400.
