The Indian market is a constantly evolving one. New trends catch up quickly. Currently, the 7-seater segment is the hottest in India. Tata, sensing this change, launched the Tata Safari. But the recent launch of Kia Carens has shifted focus to the affordable 7-seater segment. In today’s article, we will discuss Tata’s Caren competition that is expected to be in works.

Why does Tata need to do it?

Currently, Tata lacks products in two segments, the C-segment and the affordable MPV segment. Cars in both these segments are in high demand. It is already working on a C-segment SUV with the Nexon Coupe. Tata also recently revealed the Curvv concept, which can take on C-segment cars. So side by side, it needs to target the affordable MPV segment. Traditionally this segment has been dominated by Maruti. But the launch of Carens has shaken this segment. If Tata can bring a car in this segment, it can take sales away from the Ertiga and Carens.

Problems Tata is facing?

This is a bit complicated for Tata. Currently, Tata has only two new platforms, the Alfa Architecture and the OMEGA platform. The problem with the Alfa Architecture is that it can’t get bigger in its current avatar. The second option is OMEGA architecture. But the problem is it is derived from the Land Rover’s D8 platform, which will bump up the price. It will not make sense for Tata if they can’t price the 7-seater competitively.

There is nothing concrete about this affordable MPV from Tata. But the recent success of Carens may have attracted Tata’s attention to this segment. Also, since Hyundai is looking to enter this segment, Tata too might take up a fight here.
