How will these 3 carmakers change the Indian EV game?
The Indian car sector has seen rapid growth in the last five years, thanks to the growing trend of SUVs. Even the EV segment is still seeing a slow-yet-consistent growth. This segment is however expected to see a major boom in the upcoming years as soon as some prominent mass-market manufacturers enter the game. And this is what manufacturers are doing. They are readying their EV plans to take a part in this growth. In today’s article, we will take a look at the EV plan of the top 3 manufacturers in India.
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti might have been reluctant to enter the EV space for a long time but it has plans to make a splendid entry once it debuts. As of now, the brand has no electric vehicles in its lineup. It was expected to begin with the WagonR EV but it dropped this plan due to the price constraints. Currently, Maruti is working with Toyota and is developing a to-be-shared electric midsize SUV codenamed YY8. Maruti is expected to venture into the EV space by 2025.
India EV plan – Hyundai
Hyundai hasn’t dabbled much in the EV space when we take India into consideration. The brand launched the Kona electric SUV in 2019, but the Kona hasn’t garnered much sales. Now, Hyundai is looking to bring the Kona facelift to improve its sales. Hyundai is expected to bring some EVs from its global lineup to India. It is planning to launch the Ioniq 5 by the end of this year. Hyundai is also working on mass-market EVs specifically for the Indian market.
Tata
Tata is currently the biggest manufacturer in the EV space. It has dabbled into the EV space with cars like the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. Now it is looking to launch the Nexon EV long-range. This will be followed by more EVs like Altroz EV, Tiago EV and Punch EV. Tata is also focusing on making ground-up EVs. We are also expecting to see the Sierra make a grand comeback in an EV avatar. It recently unveiled its new electric SUV concept called the Curvv. The production-spec EV based on the Curvv is expected to be launched in 2024.
