Range anxiety continues to be a hot topic in th EV segment. EV manufacturers claim a range which could seem to be ideal for most buyers, however this is never the case. Generally, the EV range is calculated in ideal conditions. In real-world conditions, the range drops significantly since it is affected by all sorts of things like terrain, AC modes, etc. Now, Kia has done a research that says that even your music taste affects the range. In today’s article, we will see how your music choice will impact your EV range and becomes one of the factors affecting your EV range.

Kia’s research

Kia recruited Dr Duncan Williams, a lecturer at the University of Salford’s School of Science, Engineering and Environment, and co-founded WaveTrace. Kia wanted to see how music choice would impact the real-world mileage of the Kia EV6. To conduct this test, Kia handed participants who have never driven EVs a Kia EV6 GT-line S trim. This variant was chosen as it has the most powerful speaker system of all trims. Drivers were provided with a fixed playlist and device that measured biometrics like skin temperature, sweat, pulse and heart rate variability. Then the researcher sent them on a fixed 28km route.

After two days of testing, Dr Willams immediately noted that different kinds of music had a drastically impact on the range. Classic slow beat music leads to more relaxed driving while pop music resulted in more spirited driving, ultimately draining the battery quickly. This is kind of not surprising considering this happens in ICE cars too. Even the fuel mileage is affected. But it becomes more important in EVs due to the range anxiety and the lack of readily available charging infrastructure.
