EVs continue to gain traction not just globally but in India as well. However, this traction is still loose and carmakers would need some more grip in order to make electric vehicles a successful business case for themselves. As of now, electric vehicles face a lot of problem in India and that is exactly what we discuss in today’s article. Let’s go.

High cost

Problems with electric vehicles

EV technology is still in its development stage. Batteries are not readily available which makes them a scarce component, increasing their cost. This in return increase the input cost and thus EVs are more expensive than ICE cars. For example, the Tata Nexon starts from Rs 8.75 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). In comparison, the Nexon EV starts from Rs 15.66 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This huge difference might discourage a lot of customers from buying BEV.

Problems with electric vehicles – Infrastructure issues

Problems with electric vehicles

The EV infrastructure is still quite basic in India. The infrastructure issues not only include fewer charging stations but it also includes the lack of proper charging setup at homes. A lot of people don’t have proper parking in India. So for such people, charging an electric vehicle can be a major problem.

Range anxiety

Connected to the charging infrastructure is the range anxiety problem. EV owners are often worried about the vehicle’s capacity to reach from point A to point B. This is a major problem that can only be solved with an improved range or by improving the charging infrastructure & lowering charging times.

Environment

The environment can affect the performance of EVs to a large extent. A battery’s performance can be affected by too cold or too hot regions. Recently we have seen a lot of examples of two-wheelers catching fire. Though the causes of these fires have not yet been revealed, hot temperatures could have surely played their part.

Problems with electric vehicles – Lack of service options

EVs don’t have many moving parts making them easier to maintain. But in the end, it can still face breakdowns. In an ICE car, you can service the car at any service station. But as EVs are still in the nascent stage, there is a need for repair professionals or finding trained workers. Automakers are still expanding their EV service network.
