SUVs have become the new craze in India but most of these SUVs are kind of urban SUVs with limited off-road capabilities. For proper off-roading capabilities, you need a 4×4 system. We already have a decent number of cars with 4×4 systems. But we can expect a lot of new cars with 4×4 and AWD in the upcoming time. In today’s article, we will see upcoming cars with 4×4/AWD systems in India.
Toyota Hilux
The Hilux was unveiled for India just a few days ago. The Hilux will be Toyota’s attempt at igniting the pickup segment in India. It will come with a 4X4 system paired to Toyota’s 2.8-litre diesel engine. The pickup segment is quite a niche segment in India, but the entry of Toyota can help speed up the process. The pricing for the Hilux will be revealed in March with deliveries set to begin in April.
Mahindra Scorpio
Earlier, the Scorpio used to come with a 4×4 system, but Mahindra had to discontinue it after the implementation of the BS6 norms. Mahindra is set to offer a system with the upcoming new-generation Scorpio. The Scorpio is already a capable off-roader and a 4×4 system will make it even stronger in terms of off-roading capabilities.
Upcoming cars with 4×4/AWD- Jeep Meridian
Jeep is testing the seven-seater version of the Compass. It is rumoured to be named the Meridian for the Indian markets. Cars from this American brand are known for their off-roading capabilities and we can expect the same on the Meridian. It will come with a 4×4 system on its mid and top variants. The Meridian is expected to offer more features than the Compass in order to justify its position as a flagship SUV.
Maruti Jimny
The Jimny is one of the most hotly anticipated off-roaders. Considering it is targeted at the lifestyle segment, it is expected to come with a 4X4 system. It is expected to become the cheapest car with a 4×4 system in India. Maruti is currently working on a five-door version of the Jimny to offer more practicality to the buyers here.
New-generation Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai is planning to launch the new-generation Tucson in India. Cars have already started reaching some dealerships. The current;y-available Tucson already comes with a AWD option, so we expect the new-generation to also come with one. The AWD option will be offered with the 2.0-litre diesel engine. New-generation Tucson will be coming with a complete design makeover and lots of additional features.
Upcoming cars with 4×4/AWD – Jeep Junior
Jeep is working on a compact SUV rumoured to be called the Junior. Jeep will not skimp on its traits and will offer its new 4Xe tech on the Junior. In this, the front axle is engine driven whereas the rear axle is driven by an electric motor. The Junior will be based on the CMP platform and will carry forward a lot of features from the C3 apart from keeping its unique bits and pieces.

The Jeep Junior’s drive-line (engine driven FWD and electric motor driven RWD) is a novel idea and I hope the Indian version actually comes with this feature.
The best of both worlds so to speak!
I am eagerly waiting for this model to launch in India.
