Mahindra Scorpio variant breakdown – Still the SUV to buy?
The Scorpio SUV is one of Mahindra’s biggest hits. The car oozes muscular road presence and its tough & sturdy build quality makes it useful for rough usage. A while back, the automaker had launched a BS6-compliant engine for the Mahindra Scorpio. The Scorpio has five trims on offer which come equipped with a single engine-gearbox combination- 2.2-litre mHawk diesel with a manual gearbox; five-speed for S3+ and six-speed for S5, S7, S9, S11. In today’s article, we have a look at the Mahindra Scorpio variant breakdown and figure out if it is still the best SUV to buy.

Scorpio S3+
The S3+ comes powered by the 2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk turbo-diesel engine making 120bhp and 280Nm of torque. This trim is only offered with the option of a 5-speed manual gearbox and with a rear-wheel-drive layout. This variant is offered with 17-inch steel wheels, Micro-Hybrid technology (engine start-stop), tilt-adjust steering wheel, manual central locking, rear parking sensors, dual airbags, ABS, LED tail lamps, 12V socket (front only) and manual AC. The base trim of the Scorpio is priced at Rs 15.04 lakh.
Scorpio S5
The Mahindra Scorpio S5 trim offers features like black steel rims with wheel cap, speed-sensing auto door locks, dual airbags, ABS, silver side-step and footstep. Inside the cabin, it offers full fabric seat upholstery and bottle & cup holder. Mahindra starts offering the 2.2-litre mHawk engine from this variant, which is tuned to produce 140bhp and 319Nm of torque. The manual gearbox is a six-speed unit now. The S5 variant of the Scorpio costs Rs 15.72 lakh.
Scorpio S7
The Mahindra Scorpio S7 offers similar features to that of the S5 trim. However, additional elements like front-seat armrest, electrically adjustable ORVMs, anti-theft warning, rear washer-wiper, rear defogger, projector headlamps, puddle lamps, voice assist system remote central locking, 2 Din audio system, speakers & tweeters, voice assist system, 12V socket (front & second row) height-adjustable driver seat, roof rails, spoiler and silver skid plate to name a few. The S7 trim is priced at Rs 18.46 lakh.
Scorpio S9
Going up the variants the Mahindra Scorpio S9 trim offers the best of both worlds with its tough exteriors and upmarket interiors. The S9 variant comes with an emergency calling feature, front fog lamps, anti-pinch & auto roll-up smart driver window, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, gear-shift indicators and static bending headlamps to name a few. Mahindra Scorpio S9 trim costs Rs 19.07 lakh.
Mahindra Scorpio variant breakdown – Scorpio S11
Scorpio’s top-of-the-line variant comes fully equipped with features of the S9 trim and additional features like alloy wheels, TPMS, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, reverse parking camera with assist, leather-wrapped steering wheel and chrome front grille inserts being some of the key ones. The top-of-the-line variant costs Rs 20.57 lakh.
Is it the best SUV to buy?
We think that S5 and S7 trims of the Mahindra Scorpio can prove to be absolute value-for-money if you want a tough built 7-seater with a manual transmission. However, going up with the variants which are priced at 18 lakh and more, you might want to consider a car with better upmarket interiors, which has more to offer in terms of features. But there is no denying that under 20 lakhs the build, road presence and versatility offered by the Scorpio.
