Ford’s global EV strategy

Ford has been working on two new EV platforms, one that will support RWD and one that will support AWD, under its strategy for future products. Ford believes that 40% of its customers would have shifted to EVs by 2030 on a global scale. Also, the brand is working towards the development of different types of batteries & battery technologies that will be used in its future passenger as well as commercial EVs. For instance, the brand is looking into solid-state batteries which come at a low cost but provide big range numbers. The brand might bring these solid-state batteries to the market before 2030. Along with the development of platforms and batteries, the brand is also looking to strengthen its cloud-based services for EVs. These cloud-based services include OTA updates and other functionalities which will be directly added to the EV.

Ford EVs that we can expect in India

Ford Mahindra MachE

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E could be one of the EVs that we might get to see in India in the coming time. The first EV from the brand does get impressive specifications for the competition to worry about. The entry-level variant, which we are expecting for India, is made available with a rear-wheel drivetrain. It gets a 68 kWh battery pack as well as an 88 kWh extended battery pack. The EV delivers ranges in the vicinity of 340km and 483 km respectively. The car can do 0-100 in less than 8 seconds with the top speed limited to 179 km/h. The EV also comes with e-AWD compatibility. Currently, the Mustang Mach-E would find its competition in Jaguar I-Pace. With Tesla & Audi also expected to bring the EVs here, Ford would surely need a strong strategy to market the Mustang EV.

The next product that the brand might bring here is the Ford Territory EV. It is already being speculated that the brand is planning a C-segment SUV for the country that would take on cars like Hyundai Creta & Kia Seltos. Also, it has been continuously speculated that Ford might use its Territory to compete against the other C-segment cars. The brand already has the car in markets like China, Brazil, the Philippines and a few others. Also, markets like China have the Ford Territory EV. Ford could kill two birds with a single stone if they decide to bring the Territory here. Territory EV can deliver a range of close to 435km on a full charge. Fast charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in mere 32 minutes. On regular charging, the car goes from 10% to 100% in 8.4 hours. The car if brought to India would face the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona, given no other car is coming in competition.
