Maruti Baleno – The Sales King

Premium hatchback segment, truly created by Hyundai i20 led to the birth of a competitor from Maruti Suzuki. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno was specifically made to compete against the Hyundai i20 and the sales figures show that it is winning. Sales figures

The COVID 19 pandemic affected the automobile sector quite severely at the start and after-effects are still visible of the pandemic.  The sales figures of FY’21 are as follows. Maruti Suzuki Baleno leads the premium hatchback segment with 5,887 units sold. Surprisingly the Tata Altroz, though newer stands second with 4,483 units sold. The creator of this segment seems has lost its touch and Hyundai i20 only managed to sell 3,596 units.

Market Conditions

These sales figures are much below compared to FY’20 but still paint a clear picture of customer inclination. Premium hatchback is becoming a popular segment in the country with 18,304 total units sold. Maruti Suzuki with its brand name retains 32% of market share in this segment. Tata Altroz and Hyundai i20 both have a market share of 24% and 20% respectively.

Highlights about the cars

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno costs between Rs.5.64 to Rs.8.96 lakh.  Both BS6 petrol and diesel engine option is available on offer. The car is also offered with both Manual and Automatic transmission.  The Tata Altroz on the other hand costs between Rs. 5.29 to Rs.9.29 lakh.  It is also available with both petrol and diesel engine options.

The Hyundai i20 costs between Rs.6.49 to Rs.8.3 lakh. A BS6 petrol engine is only on offer with the car.  You also get only a manual transmission with the car.  This car looks and feels dated now and is bound to get an update soon.
