Tata is a company that has completely transformed itself from the time it was born in the automobile segment. It was known as a manufacturer for commercial vehicles. It then introduced passenger vehicles as well into the market. In recent times, the company has reached new heights with safety being the new priority of the company. Tata has particularly established itself in the SUV segment with the likes of the Nexon and the Harrier. But one of the most iconic cars for Tata was a hatchback called the Tata Indica. It became one of the most popular hatchbacks for years to come and also introduced diesel engines to hatchbacks. Could it possibly come back to the Indian market?

Current hatchbacks

The current hatchbacks offered by Tata are the Tiago and the Altroz. The Tiago is an entry-level hatchback from Tata. This is meant for the likes of people who mainly use the car for city commute and want a fresh design. The Tiago is also offered with an AMT gearbox stressing its use for the city. The Altroz, on the other hand, is a premium hatchback that is feature loaded and is built on a completely new platform. It comes with premium features such as cornering lamps, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, voice assist, anti-glare IRVM, cooled glovebox, push-button start and cruise control. All these are not seen on the Tiago. The Altroz also comes with a diesel engine as it is a car meant for long journeys as well.

Tata Indica EV

Tata Sierra EV

The Sierra was also showcased in the Auto Expo 2020. It seems that Tata could bring back the iconic names of its past.

With the company now keeping EVs as their focus. The Indica could well be an EV hatchback by the company. It would make more sense to bring out a new model as an electric vehicle rather than add an electric variant to its lineup. Tata has tried that with the Nexon EV but it does not seem to sell too well. Meanwhile, the more expensive Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS have been selling in good numbers. Therefore, a different hatchback from the company altogether could be the answer.

With the Sierra also getting an electric powertrain, there are a lot of chances that the company could bring in an EV hatchback as well.

If the Indica name is revived in the market then the car will most probably be brought in in its EV form rather than an internal combustion engine. As of now, they have no plans for an EV hatchback. But adding one can complete their lineup. For now, they have the Gravitas that is to be launched soon.
