The Volkswagen Tiguan is a mid-size SUV known to be equipped with most of the features offered by more premium brands. It is also cheaper than its German rivals such as the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. However, it could not really compete with the likes of the Ford Endeavor the Toyota Fortuner as it was only offered as a 5 seater.

Volkswagen plans to possibly change this with the introduction of the new Tiguan Allspace.

Volkswagen Tiguan Competition

The Tiguan Allspace will be considerably longer in dimensions than the car that it is based on, which could translate into two things; more space for the rear passengers and the addition of two seats. The latter seems to make more sense in our market. By doing this Volkswagen could possibly get into a new market space that is currently captured by the likes of the Honda CRV, Toyota Fortuner, Ford endeavour and the Alturas G4.

Although these seem to be considerably bigger in terms of size than the Tiguan, they lack the German fit and finish that the Tiguan has along with the intuitive DSG gearbox. The motor although lacking in power compared to its competitors does not feel underpowered in any sense and is more than sufficient for highway use.

The Tiguan, although not being a success has failed to establish its own space in the market compared to other VW products such as the Polo and this new layout is sure to attract the Indian crowd.

What was seen in the Spyshots

From the pictures, it is visible that the Tiguan has considerably increased in size. It is 215mm longer and is not much different from the exterior retaining those conservative but well-defined looks. The rear overhangs of the car obviously grown in size giving the rear a slightly mg hector like look which is not necessarily a bad thing considering the popularity of the latter. With the Allspace expected to be priced higher than the Tiguan, we could expect some things to be added on to the car such as a new 2.0L petrol engine seeing the recent demand for them in the Indian market, and hopefully, it will retain its all-wheel-drive system.

It is undergoing final testing on the Indian roads currently and is expect to be launched at the start of the second half of this year.

With seven seats being offered in the Tiguan Allspace, it will be helpful for VW to justify its 30lakh plus price range. Also, check out our review on the Volkswagen Tiguan ;
