Kia’s next SUV is to be electric!

Kia India is one of the few manufacturers that has tasted success within a short time. With an aggressive lineup of SUVs in the compact and C-SUV segment, the brand has also kickstarted its electric portfolio with the EV6. Now with a more prominent SUV forte, the brand is preparing a new ground-up vehicle for the Indian market. This new SUV which is likely to get ICE as well as an EV powertrain and would surely penetrate new markets for the brand. Let’s look at this new Upcoming SUV from Kia.

Codenamed the ‘AY’, Kia is planning to bring another sub-4 metre SUV to India. This SUV could also be exported to the global markets from India. The South Korean automaker plans to position this SUV between the Sonet and the Seltos. While both these cars offer a modernised SUV look but this new SUV will be more inclined towards the lifestyle offroad segment. Therefore, we can expect this one to get a tall stance and an upright look like the Kia Soul available overseas. 

Specifications 

This new SUV with its utilitarian looks is likely to captivate Thar and Jimny buyers. However, it is unlikely to adopt any AWD or 4WD capabilities in the ICE model. The only offering for the fossil fuel model is the 1.0-litre turbo petrol with an FWD setup. No concrete details are available about the electric version but the brand is foraying 20% of sales of this model from its EV derivative.

Kia is developing this SUV for other global RHD markets. Keeping this point in perspective and being a Kia car, features would be of no short. It is likely to get all the bells and whistles with spacious interiors due to its tall and upright stance. As far as pricing is concerned, we can expect it to be priced between Rs 12 to 24 lakh depending on the variant and powertrain you are buying. 

Launch 

The South Korean automaker now holds a share of 10 to 12% in the total sales of the UV market. In no time, it has managed to sell SUVs in good numbers due for various reasons. Therefore, it is a no-brainer that Kia would be wanting to bring another hot product in the same. Now, wherein India is the third largest market for the automaker, this model is expected to unveil somewhere around 2025.
