The Toyota Yaris has been launched and the deliveries will begin from this month. While there were speculations of a diesel engine being introduced in the Yaris at a later stage, it seems that Toyota is not interested in getting an oil-burner in this sedan. As per the company, the mid-size segment comprises mostly of petrol cars and the demand for diesel is going down in this segment. N. Raja, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motors said, “The Yaris will cater to the new demands of the customers and match their discerning needs. The segment is equally competitive and we understand that customer demands are changing with them being exposed to more global products lately.The C-segment space is growing and we aim to expand the market and get the fair share that Toyota deserves. We are not primarily looking at big sales numbers,”
He added, “Petrol dominates big in the C-segment, contributing to over 70 percent of the sales, and since we are coming in late, we have done elaborative market research and decided to only stick to a petrol offering. So, a diesel engine option is not on the cards as of now.”
The prices of this sedan have been revealed last month, by the company. The sedan starts at ₹ 8.75 lakhs (ex-showroom) and goes upto ₹ 14.07 lakhs (ex-showroom). The launch of the Yaris will happen on 18th, aftr which the deliveries will commence. Toyota is betting big on the Yaris. This will be tough competitor to the segment leader, Honda City. Toyota Yaris 2018 Specifications
|Transmission||6-speed manual / CVT with 7-speed paddle shift|
|Fuel Tank||40 litres|
|Boot space||590 litres|
The 2018 Toyota Yaris comes only with a petrol engine. This 1.5-litre engine will be churning about 110bhp of power. It is a new-gen petrol engine, while the Etios had the older gen one. The same block has been modified and gets many changes. This engine will come mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There will also be a CVT on offer. A diesel engine will not be offered as of now, as the demand for frugal petrol engines is growing in this segment.
Toyota has the Etios, which is spacious but never was premium. This will be the company’s premium sedan. The Yaris will be competing with the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna. This new sedan shares its platform with the Etios and so will the new one do. There is also the new-gen Honda city in the works already.
Toyota has seen a strong player in the premium segment, but it seems to have missed out somewhere. The Corolla Altis has been doing well, but the segment has shrunk. The 2018 Toyota Yaris will be highly localised sedan and Toyota is looking at adding this to its list of best sellers.
2018 Toyota Yaris Design
2018 Toyota Yaris a new-generation sedan. The design language isn’t anywhere closer to the Etios or the Corolla Altis. There are some elements that are shared, like the front grille styling seen on most of the Toyota sedans sold in other markets. The headlamps are pulled back and are projectors. There is a large grille on the bumper for air intake. The fog lamp is round and the daytime running LEDs are on the bumper. The hood has a crowned design
The side profile of the 2018 Toyota Yaris is subtle and it will come with 15-inch wheels. There is a crisp line running across the silhouette. The door handles will have chrome and the wing mirrors have turn indicators. The rear continues with the same styling. There are LED tail lamps and this is something like the Kizashi at the rear. There shall be a thin chrome strip too. The radio antenna will be mounted at the rear.
2018 Toyota Yaris sedan competition
The competition for this sedan are on a rise. There is already the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz. These take up about 80% of the market share. This is followed by the VW Vento and the Skoda Rapid. There will be new entrants like the Tata X451.
