Mahindra Scorpio electric in the making

Mahindra has began work on the Scorpio electric. This will be the electric of the current Scorpio only and the company is looking at getting into the Indian car market in the next two years. Mahindra had announced it will be launching two electric vehicles on its existing platforms.

One of them will be the KUV100 NXT and then it will be the Scorpio also. The Mahindra brand has been the pioneer for electric vehicles in India. The Mahindra Scorpio electric will have good scope.

The Indian utility vehicle manufacturer had procured Reva and then came the e2O, e2O Plus, Supro Electric, Verito Electric and some more commercial vehicles. Mahindra is looking at introducing the Scorpio in its electric avatar. There are reports suggesting that Mahindra Scorpio electric is already under testing. The Indian UV maker had already showcased the XUV500 hybrid at the 2016 Auto Expo and this year it should show a lot more electric vehicles. The goal is to have an SUV that have a good range and quick charging option too. Even though it is a tad early, but more work needs to be done on the ecosystem. The infrastructure at the moment is a much bigger challenge than anything else.

As the ecosystem is changing with the centre’s push, Mahindra is looking to be ready with new products. Also with Ford’s JV with Mahindra, we reckon this will mean more vehicles with the same set of electric powertrains. As Mahindra is ready with the technology, we believe it will be time for the company to add more to its list.

Recently Mahindra introduced the facelift version of the Scorpio. This got a more powerful diesel engine churning about 140bhp of power and first time a six-speed manual transmission for the Scorpio. There were timely updated for the TUV300 and the KUV100 too. Then there is a XUV500 facelift in the pipeline.

Mahindra is also working on a set of new products too, which is an MUV – codenamed as U321, compact SUV – codenamed as S201 and the full-blown SUV called as the TUV300 Plus. These will be the new-set of products from the Indian car brand.

These will be replacing the existing products.
