We were the first to announce that Hyundai Kona will be the name of the new SUV. Hyundai Kona has been unveiled. This is an all new SUV and it is based on the Intrado concept that was revealed a while ago. After that there have been several reports about this new compact SUV, its images, date of launch etc. Now, the Korean automaker has officially revealed the images of the Kona. It is a small SUV and this will be a tad smaller than the Creta. So, for Indian markets it will be competing with the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford Ecosport.
Hyundai had showcased the Carlino in India. This is also a concept form of a compact SUV and one of the two will be making an entry in India. The Hyundai Kona is about 4,165mm long, but if it makes its entry in India, it shall be about 4 metres in length. Undercutting the current excise duties levied on cars as per their length.
Hyundai Kona Launch Date
We believe the launch date of the new Kona SUV should be around early 2018 in the European market. Hyundai has been working towards getting this SUV at the earliest to enhance its market reach. This SUV will help Hyundai to reach out to more buyers, who need something smaller than the Creta. Hyundai will want to get into the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford Ecosport segment and eat into the SUVs numbers or grow the segment further. For India, we can expect to make an entry by 2019.
Hyundai Kona Price in India
|Base Petrol 1.4||INR 7.9 lakhs|
|S Petrol 1.4||INR 8.5 lakhs|
|SX Petrol 1.4||INR 9.3 lakhs|
|SX (O) Petrol 1.4||INR 10.3 lakhs|
|SX Petrol 1.4 Auto||INR 10.4 lakhs|
|SX Petrol (O) 1.0||INR 11.5 lakhs|
|Base Diesel||INR 9.5 lakhs|
|S Diesel||INR 10.3 lakhs|
|SX Diesel||INR 11.3 lakhs|
|SX (O) Diesel||INR 12.3 lakhs|
We reckon this compact SUV should be priced somewhere between INR 7.9 lakhs to INR 12.3 lakhs (on-road price). This should be the ideal pricing for a SUV. Hyundai could look at charging a premium, but then it even needs to create a gap between the Kona and the Creta. The Hyundai Kona will be overlapping in price with the Hyundai i20 Active and even the other compact SUVs.

Hyundai Kona Design
Hyundai Kona has been known as the i20 SUV so far. This will be sharing the same platform with the existing Hyundai compact vehicles. Being a monocoque, it will be a front wheel drive and no AWD shall be made available in India. At the same time, the Hyundai Kona’s design will be similar to the one we have spotted on test in Europe.

This SUV looks different and it seems to be pattern for the upcoming Hyundai vehicles. The headlamps are sleek and the fog lamps appear to be larger. The front grille is now lower and even bigger than ever. The crowned hood looks cool and the alloy wheels also appear to be muscular. At the same time, the dual tone theme is carried forward with a contrast roof colour on the Kona. The side profile is more like a crossover than an SUV. The silhouette doesn’t have too many lines and looks subtle with the floating roof. It is at the rear that a lot of similarity can be seen with the current Hyundai vehicles.
Hyundai Kona Interiors
The interior styling on the Hyundai Kona is all new. This gets a new steering wheel with three-spokes. There are multiple controls on the wheel. The instrument cluster is made of two dials and driver information system. The centre console consists of a large touchscreen system, AC vents, climate control and then stowage space. The side AC vents are circular. The interiors are all black and the car will be offering the best-in-class features. The regular safety bits for India should include dual airbags and ABS as a standard offering.
Hyundai Kona Engines
Hyundai has been working on a range of new engines. The 1.0-litre direct injection turbo petrol one shall make it into the Kona. Then there will even be a 1.4-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel mills too that will be made available on the Hyundai Kona. The Hyundai Kona will be coming with six-speed manual and maybe even AMT or automatic transmissions too. The diesel should also get a two-pedal layout. Hyundai has been working on a new range of SUVs for India and this compact one will be the smallest on offer. There was a plan to get mild hybrid on the compact SUV, but now it seems there might not be one on offer.

Hyundai Kona Competition
A direct competition to the Hyundai Kona will be the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport. The upcoming SUVs include the Tata Nexon. The other competing vehicles with the Hyundai Kona shall include the Honda WR-V and the Hyundai i20 Active. The Fiat Avventura also falls in the same price bracket.
Hyundai Kona is an exciting SUV that will change how the segment is at the moment. It will boost the sales of this segment with its quality, features and performance.
