Yamaha R15 V3 launch by mid-2018

Yamaha R15 V3 has been revealed. This is the third-generation of this bike and hence it is called as V3 or V3.0. The first two generations of this small sports bike has been a runaway success for the company and there is an improvement in each of the new generation. The second-gen had seen a major update for the bike, as it got a new chassis, better performance and even enhanced riding dynamics.  The third generation has also got many changes to call it an all new bike.

To begin with, the design is similar to the bigger Yamaha bikes and this is what makes it look bigger. There isn’t a major change in the dimensions of this new bike, but it does seem so different. One can easily mistake this bike to be bigger than a 150cc bike. The R15 V3 still has a 150cc engine, but this gets an upgrade too. This engine now churns close to 19bhp of power and it has quicker valves for better performance.

There are a range of new features that being offered on the bike. Yamaha’s new small sports bike features multiple bits that do go missing on the current bikes. The twin-headlamps, daytime running LEDs and its a long list. There is still no ABS and we regret that. In today’s age of performance, speed, power, we also need equally good brakes. With ABS, there is tad more control and it enhances safety. This will be helpful, especially for newer riders who are looking at getting a sports bike.

Yamaha R15 V3 Design

There are a lot of design elements on the new Yamaha R15 V3 that have trickled down from the bigger Yamaha bikes. To begin with, there is an all new fascia and split headlamps, which are similar to that on the R6. The snout looks wider than before and there is a large windshield too. The mirrors seem more aerodynamic than before. As this is a fully-faired bike and this one does seem bulkier.

The side profile does look sporty and the fuel tank looks muscular. There are multiple strakes on the side profile of the bike. The bike won’t be too tall and there shall be stepped seats. The rider’s seat is wide and large, while the pillion won’t have much room. This will be due to the tapering design of the bike. The rear flaunts the typical Yamaha design and it stands out in the crowd. The rear gets monoshock suspension and this is visible in the images itself. The seating of the pillion shall be very high. The tail lamps shall also sport LEDs. The tyres are meatier and the handle bars look wider as well.

Torque14.7Nm@ 8,500 rpm

A new-generation and no change in performance? This isn’t possible. The same 155cc engine is carried forward on the R15 V3, but there is a change in its performance. This engine now churns about 19-20bhp of power and the torque also has been increased to about 15Nm. At the same time, there is Drive By Wire technology too on the bike. This will enhance the throttle response as well.

There is an increase in the power of the bike and even the torque. Both these will contribute to better outright performance. The 155cc bike even gets slipper clutch, but no ABS. This isn’t offered in the markets where it has been launched. The engine comes mated to a six-speed transmission. This is a slick box and continues to be there on the new bike as well. There will be an improvement in performance and this is further enhanced by the drive by wire and even the new actuators on the engine. This improve the performance of the valves and speed up their movement, resulting in efficient movement.

Yamaha R15 V3 Price in India

VariantExpected Price (on-road)
Expected lower priceINR 1.5 lakhs
Expected higher priceINR 1.6 lakhs

Yamaha has been aggressive with its pricing and even the FZ25 recently launched has been priced well. But the point that has to be made here is that this bike cannot be categorised and priced as per the engine capacity. This bike gets a lot more equipment and hence it will be more expensive than the regular 150cc bikes. So, we reckon the price of the new R15 V3 should be somewhere close to INR 1.5 to INR 1.6 lakhs (on-road). This bike might have a smaller engine, but it is lighter and quicker than many bigger bikes too.

Yamaha R15 V3 Design

The new Yamaha R15 V3 has been derived from its elder siblings. There is a clear resemblance in its styling with the R6 and other design elements are also shared. The new bike looks stylish and appealing. The new Yamaha R15 V3 looks wider with its new fascia and the windshield seems to be larger than before. The bike shall remain low in height and the mirrors appear to be bigger. At the same time, side profile seems to be designed more like the bigger Yamaha bikes. The seat is stepped and it seems to be higher than before. At the same time, the seat even appears to be wider.

The bike does have more power and better performance. But this doesn’t mean it won’t have good mileage. The R15 V3.0 should have a mileage of about 40-49km/l. This will be improved due to the actuators and drive by wire that improve the efficiency of functioning.
