Maruti Kizashi

The Kizashi was kind of ahead of its time when Maruti launched it in India in 2011. It was quite a competent car but failed due to various reasons. The biggest reason was that Maruti brought it as a CBU import, leading to heavy taxation. It was priced at around Rs 16 lakh, which was quite expensive for that time. Add to that, Maruti was never seen as a premium brand, hence people preferred other brands while spending that kind of amount for a car. The absence of a diesel engine was another big miss.

Toyota Yaris

The Yaris was Toyota’s rival to the Ciaz, Verna etc. However, it never took off in the sales chart. As a product, the Yaris did seem quite competent with a good design, decent enough features and automatic gearbox options. However, it failed due to its optimistic pricing and no diesel engine on offer. Toyota continues to sell the new-generation Yaris outside India, but it is unlikely to make a comeback in the country.

Flop cars in India – Skoda Octavia Combi

Flop cars in India

Estate cars never picked up popularity in India and the Octavia Combi was another victim of this. With high hopes, Skoda launched the Octavia Combi in 2002, but it was discontinued due to low sales. The Octavia Combi had a lot of things going for it from its European design, super practicality and great performance. Skoda should try bringing the Combi back to India as now customers are looking for such sporty cars with a good amount of boot space.

Skoda Yeti

The Yeti was a fresh design in the hordes of boring SUVs with its European design and German quality like no other SUV at the time. Talking about the Yeti, it used to come with a 2.0-litre engine with 4×2 and 4×4 capabilities. The Yeti didn’t sell because the price was very close to the Toyota Fortuner. Eventually, Skoda replaced the Yeti with the Kodiaq in all of its markets ending the iconic nameplate.

Flop cars in India – Tata Hexa

Flop cars in India

The Hexa is another car that was ahead of time. It was built on the Aria, which flopped badly. However, in the Hexa, Tata ironed out all the issues from design to internals. People who have driven the Hexa, continue to heap praises on its driveability and comfort. Sales of the Hexa took a major hit due to its more established competitors like the Mahindra XUV500 and Toyota Innova Crysta. Tata’s brand image at that time couldn’t compete with Mahindra and Toyota.
