New Hybrid Fortuner

As we all know, Toyota Hilux and the Toyota Fortuner are based on the same platform and share the same engine and transmission options. That said, introducing the hybrid technology on the Fortuner was relatively an easy task for the brand. Talking about the hybrid tech, Toyota has paired the 2.8-litre diesel engine with the 48V mild hybrid technology. In its current state of tune, the engine produces 201bhp and 500Nm of peak torque. It will be paired with a 48V battery pack which will additionally churn out 16bhp and 65Nm of torque. Now the question is, does the already power-packed Fortuner really require the additional power?

Honestly, the Fortuner does not really need the additional power and in fact, the intent to add hybrid tech is not to increase the overall output. So when Toyota first introduced the hybrid tech on the Hilux, they clearly stated the advantages. Firstly, the hybrid will help to improve the mileage of the SUV and secondly, it will also improve the off-road performance. According to Toyota, the hybrid will help to improve mileage by 10%, thanks to an updated start/stop system. Whereas the waterproofed battery will enhance the water wading capacity while the regen braking will help in controlled downsloping.
