We all know how popular the Mahindra Thar is in India. It is one of those SUVs which has an unbelievable cult following. Now the Thar is not the only SUV or the lifestyle SUV in the segment. It competes with SUVs like the Maruti Jimny and will soon face competition from the upcoming rival. Now why did we mention the affordable G-Wagon in the title? Is it really a product from Mercedes-Benz? Not really! But hold on, the SUV we are talking about is the Force Gurkha which draws a lot of design inspiration and even the powertrain from the more expensive Mercedes-Benz.

Design

Upfront, we can see the tall stance of the upcoming Force Gurkha. It gets circular LED headlamps with circular LED DRLs around them. A setup similar to the G-Wagon. The grille is somewhat small in size but houses GURKHA lettering in bold. Also do not miss those bonnet mounted turn indicators which again look similar to the expensive G-Wagon.

The side profile reveals the first look of the 5-door version of Gurkha. It is already a tall SUV and with the added length, it should command respectable road presence. The teaser shows new alloy wheels but the size could be the same at 16-inches. The rear profile however is still a suspense but we can see the vertically placed tail lamps which do not appear to be LEDs. Rest, the SUV supposedly is equipped with accessories such as rear ladder, roof rack and jerry can but the snorkel is a factory fit.

If the design is similar to the Mercedes G-Wagon, the powertrain is similar to the Mercedes. It is expected to continue with the Mercedes sourced 2.6-litre diesel engine capable of producing 91bhp and 250Nm of torque. Force needs to re-tune the engine as it does seem lacking even on the 3-door model. Another thing Force can improve is by giving it an automatic gearbox option to go with the 5-speed manual gearbox.

Surprisingly, Force is also planning to bring the 3-door back along with the new 5-door version. The brand has released the first teaser and we can expect it to launch by the end of this month. What about the pricing? The Gurkha 5-door could come in only one variant option priced at Rs 21 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

  • Wrong comparison. Gurkha can never be a sibling of G-Wagon and secondly its looks are cheap and with no AT it like having a “Star Badge, on a Maruti 800”.
