Fuel Efficient CNG SUV – Maruti Suzuki Brezza: 25.51 km/kg

The least fuel-efficient CNG car on this list is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. As the best-selling SUV model for the brand, the Brezza offers a feature-rich cabin that is practical and reliable. Additionally, the multiple powertrain options add to the versatility of the four-wheeler.

The new Maruti Brezza features a 1.5-litre K-series engine that powers both petrol and CNG fuel types. In the petrol mode, the SUV produces 103 bhp and 136 Nm of peak torque, while the power output reduces to 87 bhp in the CNG mode. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox (petrol only).

Claimed fuel efficiency figures on the model stand at 25.5 km/kg in the CNG mode, making it the most fuel-efficient sub-4m SUV in the country. Key features on the Brezza include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, Arkamy’s premium sound system, LED projector headlamp, reverse camera with sensor and push button start among others.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG is offered in 3 variants – LXi, VXi and ZXi. Prices for the new model start from Rs 10.43 lakh and extend to Rs 13.94 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Maruti Grand Vitara/ Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: 26.6 km/kg

The next car on the list is Maruti’s flagship SUV, the Grand Vitara. Launched in 2023, the Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder come offered with a 1.5-litre K-series engine that produces 103 bhp and 136 Nm in petrol mode and 87 bhp and 121.5 Nm of peak torque in CNG mode. Both SUVs come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and return a claimed fuel economy of 26.6 km/kg.

CNG powertrain is offered on both SUVs on the mid-spec Delta/S and the Zeta/G variants. Prices for the Maruti models start from Rs 14.86 lakh and extend to Rs 16.87 lakh, while the Toyota SUVs cost Rs 15.55 lakh and Rs 17.66 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) respectively. In terms of features, both SUVs come provided with LED lighting, auto headlamps, cruise control, up to 6 airbags, up to 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, Arkamy premium sound system, dual front airbags and more.

Fuel Efficient CNG SUVs – Tata Punch: 26.9 km/kg

The third product on this list is the OG micro-SUV, the Tata Punch. Launched in August 2023, the Tata Punch iCNG offers the revolutionary twin-cylinder technology which liberates up to 210 litres of storage in boot. Powering the 2024 Punch CNG is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 85 bhp and 113 Nm in the petrol model and churns out a lower 73.4 bhp and 103 Nm of peak torque in the CNG mode. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox option and delivers a claimed economy of 26.9 km/kg. While its siblings, the Tiago and Tigor offer CNG AMT, Tata has not confirmed if this option will come to the Punch CNG. 

Alongside the twin-cylinder technology, the Punch also offers direct start in CNG mode, a feature no other manufacturer offers in the country. Key features on the Punch iCNG include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, digital driver’s display, 16-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamp with auto function, engine start/stop button and height adjustable driver’s seat. In addition to the above-mentioned features, the 2024 Tata Punch CNG also offers a sunroof option.

The Punch CNG is offered in 3 variants – Pure, Adventure and Accomplished with two packs Rhythm and Dazzle. Pricing for the SUV starts from Rs 8.24 lakh and extends to Rs 11.14 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Fuel Efficient CNG SUVs – Hyundai Exter: 27.1 km/kg

Alongside the Tata Punch, the Hyundai Exter has also made it to this list as the most fuel-efficient CNG SUV in India. Powering the Exter CNG is a 1.2-litre Kappa engine which produces 82 bhp and 113.8 Nm of peak torque in petrol mode, while in CNG mode the power drops to 68 bhp and 95.2 Nm. This engine is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox option and offers a claimed efficiency of 27.1 km/kg.

CNG option is available in the mid-sped S and SX variants priced between Rs 9.53 lakh and 10.34 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Key features on the CNG SUV include projector headlamps, an electric sunroof, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, auto AC, 6 airbags, TPMS and more.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx/ Toyota Taisor: 28.51 km/kg

Finally, the duo of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and the recently launched Toyota Taisor take the crown as the most fuel-efficient CNG SUV in the country. Known for their unique design and feature-rich cabin, both SUVs have become popular and efficient SUV choices in the country. Powering the SUVs is a 1.2-litre K-series engine that produces 90 bhp and 113 Nm of torque in petrol mode and 76 bhp and 98.6 Nm in CNG mode. This engine is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox option only and delivers a best-in-segment mileage of 28.51 km/kg. 

Both SUVs offer CNG in the base variants while the Fronx also adds the mid-spec Delta variant to the list. Pricing for the Maruti SUV starts from Rs 9.44 lakh and extends to Rs 10.38 lakh, while the Toyota SUV comes in at Rs 9.90 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Key comfort & convenience features on offer include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, projector headlamps, automatic climate control, steering-mounted control and keyless entry among others.
