Toyota Fortuner/Hilux

Upcoming hybrid cars

The Fortuner doesn’t need a separate introduction in the Indian market. It has annihilated the competition in the full-size SUV segment. Now, Toyota could take it one step further by introducing a mild hybrid setup on the 2.8-litre diesel engine. Recently, it introduced the mild hybrid Hilux that comes with the same 2.8-litre diesel engine. This engine is paired with a 45V mild hybrid with an electric motor. Toyota claims that this setup will have no impact on the off-road capability of the Hilux. Toyota is expected to introduce this tech in India sometime next year, but it remains to be seen if it debuts on the Fortuner or the Hilux.

Upcoming hybrid cars – New Maruti Swift/Dzire

Upcoming hybrid cars

Two very popular cars that could get a mild-hybrid setup are the Swift and Dzire. Suzuki introduced this new setup on the new-gen Swift revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show. Suzuki has introduced a new 1.2-litre Z12E engine that is capable of producing 80bhp and 108Nm of torque. The hybrid setup adds 3bhp and 60Nm of torque from its DC synchronous motor. Mileage-wise, the standard and mild-hybrid variants deliver 23.4kpl and 24.5kpl, respectively, on the WLTP cycle. We can expect the mild-hybrid setup on both the new-gen Swift and Dzire. Talking about the changes, we could see an evolutionary design change. The Interior could be more or less similar to the Fronx and Baleno with features like a 9.0-inch infotainment system, blind spot warning, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 360-degree camera and 6 airbags. We can expect similar changes on the Dzire too. The launch of the Swift is expected in the first half of 2024.

Nissan X-Trail

Upcoming hybrid cars

Nissan currently only has the Magnite in its portfolio. It has plans to bring several new India-specific cars but they are still a fair bit away. Till then, the brand could look to bring some CBU cars to increase its portfolio and instil confidence among customers. The first such product could be the X-Trail. In 2022, Nissan showcased the X-Trail in India. Globally, the X-Trail comes with a variety of engine options. It comes with a mild hybrid that makes 188bhp and 250Nm of torque, the 2WD makes 201bhp and 330Nm of torque. Then we have an ‘e4orce version’ which produces 210bhp and 525Nm of torque. There is uncertainty about which option Nissan will bring to India. Feature-wise, the X-Trail comes loaded with features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, driving modes, ADAS, panoramic sunroof, etc. The X-Trail could launch by mid-2024, and its price could start from somewhere around the Rs 50 lakh mark (on-road, Mumbai).

Upcoming hybrid cars – Kia Clavis

Upcoming hybrid cars

Kia’s next SUV is going to be the Clavis, which will sit between the Sonet and Seltos in its product lineup. Before talking about the Clavis, let’s first focus on its hybrid credentials. Kia recently stated that it is thinking about introducing strong hybrids in India. The brand stated that it is already working on electrifying the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol. According to reports, the Clavis will be Kia’s first hybrid car in India. Though Kia is going to launch the Clavis in 2025, the brand could unveil the Clavis by the end of 2024. Talking about the Clavis, it is expected to come with a tall and boxy design. This will help it offer more space than the Sonet, which lacks second-row legroom. We can also expect it to be loaded with features.
