Currently, we don’t have affordable coupe SUV options in India. But that is soon going to change with the launch of Tata Curvv and also the Citreon C3X. Both these coupe-SUVs are coming in petrol/diesel and EV options. Mahindra is also working on several coupe SUVs, but all of them are EVs. So that begs the question: could we see a petrol/diesel coupe from Mahindra? Could it be based on the XUV700? In today’s article, let’s talk about the Mahindra XUV700 coupe.

Mahindra XUV700 coupe – What is it?

Mahindra already has plans to bring three new coupe SUVs in the future. However, all of these are EVs and Mahindra lacks a petrol/diesel Coupe SUV option. With coupe-SUVS expected to become the trend, Mahindra should make an ICE version too. Tata is already doing that with the Curvv.  Actually, Mahindra was one of the first Indian manufacturers to showcase a coupe-SUV concept which was the Aero concept showcased at the Auto Expo of 2016. It was rumoured to be called the XUV900 if it entered production.

XUV.e9

Now let’s talk about the XUV.e9, which was showcased by Mahindra last year. Now why are we talking about the XUV.e9, which is an EV? Dimension-wise, the e9 perfectly fits the bill. It is 4790mm in length, 1905mm in width & 1690mm in height. This will position the XUV900 over the XUV700. The only problem is that the XUV.e9 is a ground-up EV, so it will be hard to convert it into a petrol/diesel car. So we think the XUV900 could just take inspiration from the XUV.e9 instead of completely being based on it.

What to expect?

The XUV700 coupe should look nothing like the Aero concept showcased at the Auto Expo of 2016. Instead, we think it could come with C-shaped DRLs with an aggressive design language similar to the XUV700. Mahindra will also give it some elements similar to the XUV.e9. We can expect sporty bumpers and side skirts. Another major change will be in the side profile due to the tapering roofline. Mahindra could also give it a spoiler to enhance the look. Engine duties could be handled by a 2.2-litre diesel (182bhp/450Nm) and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine (197bhp/380Nm). Transmission options should include a manual and an automatic option.

There is no concrete information regarding the XUV700 coupe, so we may or may not see the XUV700 coupe come to reality. Currently, Mahindra is focusing on its ‘Born Electric Cars’ with the XUV.e8 launch planned by December 2024. The XUV.e9 is expected to be launched by April 2025. The XUV700 coupe, if it happens, should be launched in a similar time frame. What about the pricing? Mahindra could price the XUV900 around the Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh mark (on-road, Mumbai).
